The brute-force approach iterates over all pairs i < j and checks the min-max conditions. This correctly constructs the graph, and a BFS from vertex 1 would yield the shortest path. However, the number of pairs is O(n²), making this infeasible for n≈10^5. Even if edge checking is optimized using prefix min/max arrays, there are still O(n²) candidate edges in the worst case.
The key insight is that the graph edges have a “monotonic jump” property. For any index, only the next smaller or next larger elements in the sequence can be reached in a single step without violating the min-max condition. Using a monotonic stack, we can preprocess these jumps efficiently. For example, a strictly increasing stack tracks candidates for max jumps, and a strictly decreasing stack tracks candidates for min jumps. Each element is pushed and popped at most once, giving an O(n) construction of the adjacency representation needed for BFS. After that, a standard BFS from vertex 1 computes the shortest path to vertex n in O(n) time.
The story is that the brute-force works because it correctly enforces the min-max edge rule, but fails due to quadratic complexity. - After BFS completes, report the distance to vertex n, which represents the length of the shortest path.
Why it works: The invariant is that at each step, all possible “min-max jumps” are captured by the monotonic stacks. Any shorter path cannot skip over a necessary min or max boundary because that would violate the min-max condition for some subarray.
