Problem Understanding

We are given a rooted tree. Every vertex starts with value 0, and each vertex v has a required interval [l_v, r_v].

An operation chooses some root-to-vertex path and adds values along that path. The added values must form a non-decreasing sequence as we move from the root toward the chosen vertex.

After performing some number of operations, every vertex value must lie inside its allowed interval. The task is to find the minimum number of operations.

At first glance the operation looks complicated because it modifies an entire path and the added sequence is constrained. The key challenge is understanding what values can actually be produced at each vertex and how operations interact across the tree.

The tree contains up to 2 · 10^5 vertices across all test cases. Any solution that repeatedly traverses paths or simulates operations explicitly will be far too slow. Since the total size is only 2 · 10^5, an O(n) or O(n log n) solution per test file is expected.

A subtle point is that operations can affect ancestors and descendants simultaneously. A greedy strategy that tries to satisfy vertices independently can easily overcount.

Approaches

A brute-force view is to think directly in terms of operations. We could try to construct operations that satisfy all intervals while minimizing their count. Unfortunately the space of possible operations is enormous. Each operation chooses a path, a length, and an arbitrary non-decreasing sequence of integers. Even for small trees there are exponentially many possibilities, making explicit search hopeless.

The crucial observation is that we do not actually need to know the operations themselves.

Suppose we process a subtree rooted at v. Imagine that all operations created inside that subtree contribute some total amount s to vertex v.

What matters for ancestors is only this total amount. The exact distribution of operations below v becomes irrelevant.

Now consider what happens at vertex v.

If the accumulated contribution from its children is already at least l_v, then we can cap the value passed upward at min(s, r_v). Sending more than r_v upward is useless because the final value of v cannot exceed r_v.

If the accumulated contribution is smaller than l_v, then no combination of existing subtree operations can satisfy v. We are forced to create one new operation whose highest useful point is inside this subtree. To maximize future benefit, we set v directly to r_v. This contributes r_v upward and costs exactly one operation.

This leads naturally to a postorder DFS.

For each vertex we compute the amount it can contribute upward after optimally handling its entire subtree.

Leaves are especially revealing. A leaf initially contributes 0. If 0 < l_v, we must start one operation there and return r_v. That matches the intuition that a leaf with positive requirement needs its own operation.

The entire solution becomes a greedy tree DP where each vertex either accepts the sum coming from its children or starts one new operation.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Root the tree at vertex 1.
  2. Process vertices in postorder, meaning every child is processed before its parent.
  3. For a vertex v, compute:
sum_children = Σ contribution(child)

This is the total value already available at v from operations created inside its descendants. 4. If sum_children < l_v, then the subtree cannot satisfy v.

Create one new operation.

Increase the answer by 1.

Return r_v as the contribution of this subtree to the parent.

The new operation effectively raises v to the largest useful value, giving maximum help to ancestors. 5. Otherwise, v can already be satisfied without creating a new operation.

Any amount above r_v cannot be used because v must remain within its interval. 6. After processing the root, the accumulated answer is the minimum number of operations.

Why it works

For every vertex, the only information relevant to its parent is the largest feasible value that can be propagated upward while keeping the entire subtree valid.

If descendant operations provide less than l_v, there is no way to satisfy v without introducing a new operation somewhere in its subtree. Creating exactly one operation is sufficient, and setting the resulting contribution to r_v is always optimal because larger contributions help ancestors and never hurt.

If descendant operations already provide at least l_v, creating another operation would be unnecessary. The best contribution to pass upward is the maximum value allowed at v, namely min(sum_children, r_v).

By making this locally optimal choice at every vertex, we maximize the help given to ancestors while never using more operations than necessary. Any solution must create an operation whenever sum_children < l_v, so the greedy decisions are forced. This proves optimality.

The DFS is implemented iteratively to avoid Python recursion depth issues. We first generate a traversal order and then process it in reverse, producing a postorder traversal.

value[v] stores the amount that subtree v can contribute upward after being handled optimally.

When the accumulated child contribution is below l[v], a new operation is unavoidable. We count it and set the contribution to r[v].

Otherwise the subtree is already valid. The contribution cannot exceed r[v], so we clamp it with min(s, r[v]).

The values can reach up to 2 · 10^5 × 10^9, so Python's arbitrary-precision integers are convenient. In languages with fixed-width integers, a 64-bit type is required.
