Problem Understanding
We are given a tree, and we must assign a positive integer weight to every vertex. A vertex is called good if its weight equals the sum of the weights of all vertices adjacent to it.
The goal is not just to satisfy this condition arbitrarily. We want to choose weights so that as many vertices as possible become good at the same time. Among all assignments that achieve the maximum number of good vertices, we also want the smallest possible total sum of all weights.
So this is a constrained construction problem: we are choosing integer values on vertices, and each “good” vertex imposes a linear equality constraint tying it to its neighbors. The challenge is to decide which vertices should be made good and how to assign weights consistently across the tree.
The constraint n ≤ 2 · 10^5 immediately rules out any exponential search over subsets of vertices or brute forcing assignments. Even attempting to try subsets of “good vertices” would be infeasible because each subset leads to solving a system of linear constraints over a tree, and there are 2^n such subsets.
A more subtle issue is that the conditions are not independent. If a vertex is declared good, its value depends on neighbors, and those neighbors may also be constrained. This means naive greedy assignments often collapse quickly into contradictions or force negative or fractional values if not handled carefully.
A key edge case appears in stars. Suppose we try to make every vertex good in a star centered at 1. Then the center would require its weight to equal the sum of all leaves, while each leaf would require its weight to equal the center. This immediately forces all leaves to equal the center, which makes the center equation impossible unless degree is 1. So trying to maximize “locally” fails globally.
Approaches
A direct brute-force approach would try selecting a subset of vertices to be good and then attempt to solve the induced system of equations. Each good vertex contributes one linear equation of the form w[u] = sum(w[v]) over neighbors. Since the tree has n vertices, any subset leads to a sparse linear system. Solving one system takes linear time, but there are 2^n subsets, which makes this approach impossible even for small n.
The key observation is that we do not actually need to choose arbitrary subsets. The structure of the equations on a tree is very rigid. If we try to make two adjacent vertices both good, their equations heavily restrict each other and quickly force contradictions unless the structure is extremely constrained. This leads to the crucial simplification: the optimal strategy is to make exactly one vertex not good, and all others good.
Once we accept that all vertices except one will satisfy their equation, the problem becomes: pick which vertex is “bad”, and then solve the resulting system uniquely. After fixing the set of good vertices, the equations form a tree-shaped linear system with exactly one degree of freedom, meaning all weights can be expressed in terms of a single root value.
We can choose the bad vertex as a root. Then every other vertex has a well-defined equation involving its parent and children, and the system becomes solvable over the tree. For each choice of root, we obtain a valid assignment, and we choose the one with minimum total sum.
The remaining task is computing the induced solution efficiently for each root. This can be done in linear time per root using a rerooting-style DP, but more importantly, the structure allows us to compute the answer for all roots in linear total time by propagating contributions.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We fix a vertex r as the only non-good vertex. Every other vertex must satisfy the equation that defines it as good.
For any good vertex u, we have a constraint:
w[u] = sum of weights of all neighbors of u.
Since the graph is a tree, we can root it at r. For any node u ≠ r, its neighbors split into parent and children. The equation becomes:
w[u] = w[parent[u]] + sum(w[child]).
This system uniquely determines all weights once we fix w[r].
To make this computationally manageable, we express every weight as a linear function of w[r]. We write:

Why it works
The system of equations formed by making all vertices except one good is a tree-structured linear system with exactly one free variable. A tree with n vertices and n−1 independent equations always leaves one degree of freedom, which we fix by choosing the bad vertex. Every valid assignment corresponds uniquely to a choice of root and a value for that root. Since scaling all weights by a constant preserves all equations, setting the root to 1 gives the minimal positive integer solution for that structure.

The solution uses a key simplification: once a root is chosen as the only non-good vertex, the remaining vertices form a tree DP where each node’s value is determined from its children. The second phase reconstructs actual weights from the best root found, and the final output directly reads from the computed DP array.
A subtle point is that the DP always assigns 1 to leaves and propagates upward as 1 + sum(children). This is exactly the minimal positive solution consistent with all “good node” constraints under a fixed root.

Edge Cases
In a star-shaped tree, selecting a leaf as the bad vertex causes large propagation in the center, increasing total sum. The algorithm avoids this by evaluating all roots and preferring the center.
In a linear chain, all middle vertices behave symmetrically. The DP assigns uniform weights when rooted centrally, and the rerooting step ensures that boundary bias does not distort the result.
