The key difficulty is that updates interact through color: values are not stored per index directly in a simple additive structure, but are instead accumulated per color, and colors themselves change over time via range assignments.

The constraints push us into a regime where both n and q can reach one million. Any solution that touches a segment per operation is immediately impossible. Even a single linear scan per query leads to 10^12 operations in the worst case, which is far beyond any time limit. This forces a design where both recoloring and adding must be handled in near constant time per operation, and queries must be answerable without scanning across the array.

A naive idea is to maintain, for each index, its current color and current value. Then a Color operation updates a range, Add updates all indices of a given color, and Query simply prints the stored value. The issue is that Add becomes expensive because a color class may contain a large fraction of the array. Similarly, Color becomes expensive because it affects many indices.

A subtle failure case appears when we try to “push updates immediately”. For example, if we recolor a range [1, n] repeatedly, and each time try to physically update arrays, we quickly degrade to quadratic behavior. Even worse, a color-based structure like a list of indices per color breaks when colors change repeatedly, since we would need to move elements between sets on every recolor, which again becomes linear per operation.

The real obstacle is that both dimensions, index and color, are dynamic: indices move between colors, and colors accumulate global additive shifts.

Approaches

The brute-force simulation is straightforward. We store an array of colors and an array of values. For Color l r c, we loop through l to r and update colors. For Add c x, we loop through all indices and add x to those with color c. Queries are O(1).

This is correct but immediately too slow. In the worst case, a single Add touches n elements, and there can be q such operations, leading to O(nq) behavior.

The key observation is that value updates depend only on color, not position. If we could somehow avoid touching individual elements when colors change, we could instead track cumulative contributions per color. The main difficulty is that colors of indices change over time, so an index does not belong permanently to one group.

The breakthrough is to reverse perspective: instead of thinking of each index as belonging to a color, we treat each color as maintaining a running “timestamped value history”, and each index only needs to know when it last changed color and what it “missed” before that change.

We maintain a global time counter over Add operations. Each color c maintains a running total add[c], representing the sum of all Add operations applied to it. When an index changes color, we need to “freeze” how much value it has accumulated so far from its old color, then attach it to the new color without recomputing history.

To achieve this efficiently, we maintain for each index:

  • its current color
  • its current value
  • a last seen contribution baseline from its color

Instead of storing per-index updates, we maintain for each index a lazy “adjustment” equal to the total color contribution at the moment it last changed color. When querying, we compute the difference between current color contribution and stored baseline.

Color updates are still range assignments, so we cannot touch every element. We therefore use a segment tree with lazy propagation over colors, where each segment is either uniform or mixed. Each node stores whether it is homogeneous in color; if so, we can directly assign the whole segment to a new color in O(1). This prevents per-element recoloring.

The additive part is handled purely at color level, so it remains O(1).

Thus, the final system combines a segment tree for color assignment and a hash or array for per-color additive sums, plus per-leaf bookkeeping for value deltas.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Build a segment tree over the array where each node stores whether its segment has a uniform color and what that color is. Initially the whole tree is color 1. This lets us assign colors to full segments without touching every index.
  2. Maintain an array add[c], storing the total value added to color c so far. This is updated in O(1) per Add query.
  3. For a Color l r c operation, traverse the segment tree. Whenever a node is fully inside the range and already uniform, we directly overwrite its color. If it is partially covered or mixed, we push it down and recurse. This ensures only O(log n) nodes are visited in typical lazy propagation fashion.
  4. When a segment becomes newly assigned to color c, we conceptually “reset its baseline” to match add[c]. This ensures that future Add operations are measured relative to the correct color history.
  5. For a Query i, we walk from root to leaf in the segment tree to determine the color of position i. Once we know its color c, we return add[c] plus any stored offset for that leaf.

The subtle part is that each index does not store its full value history. Instead, it stores only the difference between its last reset and the current global color accumulation. This avoids repeated recomputation.

Why it works

The invariant is that for every index i, its stored value equals the total contribution of all Add operations applied to its current color since the last time it changed color. Every time a color assignment happens, we reset that boundary so past contributions are no longer double-counted. Because Add operations only affect colors and never indices directly, every contribution is accounted for exactly once, and no update is ever lost or applied twice.

The segment tree is responsible only for tracking current colors under range assignment. It never stores values. This separation is essential because values depend only on color history, not structure.

The add array stores cumulative increments per color, and queries simply map an index to its color and read the corresponding accumulated sum.
