This means the state of the system is not just the current MEX, but also which values from 0 upward have already been “activated” in the prefix.

The constraints are tight: n is up to 2000 and k is up to 50. This rules out any exponential enumeration over arrays or subsets. A naive state representation that tracks arbitrary subsets of used numbers is also impossible since that would imply a factor of roughly 2^n behavior. The only way forward is to compress the state to something that depends only on the current MEX range, and to exploit the fact that k bounds how far the MEX can be forced away from the target.

A subtle edge case arises when the target b_i is negative or larger than n. A brute-force approach would try to construct all arrays a and check prefix by prefix whether the MEX constraint holds. For each position we would recompute the MEX from scratch over the prefix, which costs O(n) per step, and there are n^n arrays in total. Even pruning by constraint does not help enough, because early prefixes allow many choices before MEX stabilizes. This explodes far beyond any feasible computation.

The key observation is that MEX depends only on which small numbers have been fully “completed” in the prefix. Once a number x appears at least once, it contributes to potentially increasing MEX. What matters is not full set structure but the first missing integer.

We track the current MEX m. The prefix contains all numbers 0..m-1, and m is absent. Any new element either fills a missing number below m, which can increase MEX, or it is irrelevant noise (a value greater than m). This structure means transitions depend on whether we introduce a missing value or not.

We turn this into a DP over positions and possible MEX values. The constraint |MEX - b_i| <= k restricts valid MEX values at each step to a small window around b_i, so we only maintain DP over a band of size O(k) around each possible MEX. Transitions then come from either keeping the same MEX or increasing it by filling the current missing number.

To efficiently count how many ways we can “not change MEX” versus “increase MEX”, we maintain combinatorial choices: at each step, choosing a value greater than current MEX is equivalent to n - m options, while choosing a missing number that completes MEX is exactly one specific value.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We define dp[i][m] as the number of ways to build the first i elements such that the MEX of the prefix is exactly m. Since m is always between 0 and n, but constrained by b_i, we only consider states where m lies in [b_i - k, b_i + k].

  1. Initialize dp[0][0] = 1. At the start, no elements exist and MEX is 0 because 0 is missing immediately.
  2. For each position i from 1 to n, we build a new DP table ndp.

Edge Cases
