That is impossible here because we cannot isolate a single pair’s value with the device, since every query returns a maximum over all pairs in the set. Even if we tried all subsets of size two, we cannot query all pairs directly because interaction is limited to 12 queries.
So the key obstruction is that the device hides individual pair contributions behind a maximum operator. However, this maximum is still extremely informative: if we remove nodes from consideration and the answer does not change, then the removed nodes cannot participate in any pair achieving the current maximum.
This suggests a filtering process. If we query a set S and get a value x, then at least one pair inside S achieves x. If we partition S into two parts, and one part still yields x when queried alone, then the maximum pair lies entirely inside that part. Otherwise, it must cross into the other part. This behavior enables a binary search style elimination on nodes.
The standard idea is to maintain a candidate set of nodes that could still contain an endpoint of an optimal pair. We repeatedly split the set, query one half, and keep the half that preserves the global maximum. After narrowing down to a small set, we brute force the best pair using a few final queries on carefully chosen subsets.
The core insight is that the maximum gcd pair is “localized” in the sense that once a subset no longer contains both endpoints of an optimal pair, its query value strictly drops. This lets us use a divide-and-conquer search over nodes.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We assume we can query any subset and obtain the maximum Dist over all pairs inside it.
- We start with the full set of nodes as candidates. We query the entire set to obtain the global answer value, call it X. This value is the maximum possible Dist over the whole tree.
- We maintain a current candidate set S that is guaranteed to contain both endpoints of at least one pair achieving value X.
- We split S into two roughly equal parts, A and B. We query A alone. If the result equals X, then both endpoints of an optimal pair are entirely inside A, so we discard B. Otherwise, at least one endpoint must lie in B, so we replace S with B.
The reason this works is that if A does not contain a full optimal pair, then any pair inside A has Dist strictly less than X, so the device cannot output X.
- We repeat this splitting process until the candidate set becomes small, typically around 1 or a few nodes. At that point, we have narrowed down to a region containing at least one endpoint of an optimal pair, but not necessarily both.
- We now fix one endpoint candidate. To find its partner, we pick a node u from S and attempt to identify a node v that forms the maximum pair with u. We do this by again using subset queries: for each node v in S, we test whether querying {u, v} together (or small controlled subsets around them) preserves the maximum value X. In practice, since k=2 queries directly return Dist(u, v), we can test pairs within S.
- Once we identify a pair achieving value X, we output it.
The key limitation is query budget. Since S shrinks exponentially, we only need about log n subset queries, and the final phase uses at most n queries in worst case but over a very small S.
Why it works
The invariant is that the current candidate set always contains at least one pair of nodes whose path-gcd equals the global maximum X. When a subset query returns X, it certifies that the optimal pair is fully contained inside that subset. When it returns less than X, it certifies that no optimal pair is fully contained there, forcing at least one endpoint outside it. This guarantees that we never discard both endpoints simultaneously, so we never lose all optimal solutions. Eventually, we isolate a small region where explicit pair checking reveals an optimal pair.
