Approaches

A brute-force interpretation would be: try every subset of elements to keep, simulate the resulting array, and count fixed points. This is clearly exponential because there are 2^n subsets, and even with pruning it is far too large for n = 2000.

Instead of thinking about deletions, flip perspective: we are selecting a subsequence that remains. Suppose we keep elements at positions i1 < i2 < ... < im. In the final array, these become positions 1..m. A kept element at original index i becomes a fixed point if its value equals its new position among kept elements.

So for a kept element at position i_j, it contributes a fixed point if a[i_j] = j.

This turns the problem into choosing a subsequence where we want to maximize how many indices j satisfy a[i_j] = j. But the index j depends on how many elements we kept before it.

A more useful transformation is to think in terms of deletions before each candidate fixed point. Suppose we want some position i to become a fixed point in the final array. If we keep a[i], then its final position equals i - deletions_before_i. For it to be fixed, we need:

a[i] = i - deletions_before_i, so deletions_before_i = i - a[i].

This means each index i imposes a requirement: we must delete exactly i - a[i] elements before choosing it as a fixed point. Also, this value must be non-negative, otherwise it is impossible to ever make it a fixed point.

Now the problem becomes selecting at least k indices, each with a required “deletion budget before it”, such that these requirements are consistent in order. If we pick fixed points in increasing index order, their required deletions must be non-decreasing in a compatible way.

Why it works

Each fixed point imposes a strict alignment condition between original index, final position, and number of deletions before it. The DP enforces that whenever we choose an element as a fixed point, the prefix deletions must exactly match what is required for that element. Since deletions monotonically increase as we move forward, and we only transition forward in indices, the DP preserves consistency between all chosen fixed points. Any invalid ordering is excluded because mismatched deletion counts block transitions.
