This leads to a DP formulation where each state corresponds to how many elements currently remain in the multiset. Algorithm Walkthrough

We define a DP over prefixes. For each prefix i, we maintain states indexed by k, where k represents the current size of the multiset after processing some chosen subsequence of the first i operations. Each state aggregates all subsequences that end with k elements remaining, and we store both the number of such subsequences and the multiset sum information.

Because minus operations always remove the smallest element, within each state we only need to know the k largest values among all inserted elements that survived so far. This allows us to represent each state’s contribution as a sorted structure of size at most k.

  4. After processing all operations, each DP state contributes its stored sum multiplied by the number of subsequences that reach it, and we sum over all states.

The key invariant is that for any DP state of size k, the stored multiset always corresponds to the k largest values among all “+” operations chosen in that subsequence. This holds because any time a new value is inserted and the state exceeds capacity, removing the smallest preserves the correct structure under future minus operations, which always remove smallest elements first.
