Even restricting attention to “useful” edges still leaves a combinatorial explosion of possibilities, since every intermediate tree configuration affects future choices.

Instead of thinking in terms of edge edits, we shift perspective: we want to maximize how many edges of the final path already exist in the original tree in a consistent order.
This leads to a tree DP viewpoint: root the tree and consider that in the final bamboo, each vertex has degree at most two, meaning it behaves like part of a chain. We can treat the transformation as selecting a collection of vertex-disjoint chains and merging them, where each merge costs one operation when structure is incompatible. The optimal strategy reduces to pairing branches optimally around a central structure, effectively minimizing the number of “extra branches” that must be cut and rewired.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We root the tree at an arbitrary vertex. For each node, we compute how many child-subtrees can be merged into a single chain passing through this node without violating degree constraints.
We process nodes in postorder so that each subtree is already summarized before we handle the parent. Each child subtree contributes either a chain that can be extended upward or a structure that must be broken, depending on whether it already has an available endpoint.
At each node, we collect all “available chain endpoints” coming from children. Since a node in a path can connect to at most two neighbors, we must choose at most two such chains to continue upward, while all others must be cut and rewired.
Each time we discard a child chain, we conceptually perform one operation: we remove an edge connecting that subtree to the current node and later reconnect it elsewhere to maintain connectivity of the final path. The number of such discarded connections directly contributes to the answer.
After processing all nodes, the total number of discarded child attachments gives the minimum number of required operations.
The construction phase is derived from this DP: whenever a child is not selected as part of the kept chain, we pair its removed edge with a new edge that connects it to a suitable endpoint of another chain, ensuring we always maintain a single evolving structure.
Why it works
The invariant is that after processing a node, all vertices in its subtree are arranged into a set of disjoint path fragments, and at most two of these fragments remain eligible to be extended through the parent. This matches exactly the degree constraint in a bamboo, since any vertex in the final structure can have at most two incident edges. Any excess fragment must be disconnected from the current attachment point, and each such disconnection corresponds to one necessary operation. Since every valid final bamboo induces exactly one parent-child attachment per chain segment, no solution can preserve more attachments than this DP allows, which establishes minimality.

For each node, we collect contributions from children representing how many chain connections each subtree can preserve. Consider the first sample tree shaped like a star of depth two. We compute contributions from leaves upward. Leaves contribute zero because they already form trivial chains. At the center, many children compete for at most two preserved connections.
