This is correct in principle because it would eventually find the optimal configuration, but its complexity is astronomical due to the range of possible lengths, making it unusable.
The key observation is that the laminar structure allows a tree-like decomposition. A segment that contains other segments can be considered a parent, and its immediate children are segments fully nested within it without any intermediate nesting. Once we understand this hierarchy, we realize that within each segment, the optimal subsegments for its children will determine which portions of the parent are “used.” Therefore, a dynamic programming approach over this tree is natural.
Each segment can be represented as a node in a tree, and its children are segments directly contained in it. For each node, we want to decide how to allocate integer intervals to itself and its children to maximize total length. By restricting attention to integer intervals between consecutive endpoints (from itself and children), we reduce the candidate subsegments drastically: the optimal solution will always align with endpoints of children, because any “empty space” between children can be fully allocated to the parent.
Dynamic programming can now operate recursively. For a node, consider all intervals between its sorted children (or endpoints), compute the maximum sum achievable for its children in those intervals, and add the length assigned to the node itself. Memoization avoids recomputation.

Algorithm Walkthrough
