A naive implementation that directly updates parent pointers and recomputes depth or binary lifting tables immediately becomes inconsistent or too slow. Even if we avoid full rebuilds and only update affected nodes, we still face the issue that every parent change can cascade upward, changing depths and ancestor relationships for potentially all descendants. This destroys any hope of local updates unless we store additional structure.
The key observation is that parent pointers only move upward and only decrease. This monotonicity allows us to treat the process as repeated “jumps upward in index space,” which can be handled with a structure that supports fast “find current parent after multiple decrements.” We can interpret each parent pointer as a pointer that is repeatedly compressed toward the root, and we need a way to query its final value after all updates without explicitly applying all updates eagerly.
This is naturally handled with a segment tree that stores lazy propagation of “decrease by x, clamp at 1” operations on the parent array. Each node in the segment tree maintains a function-like transformation over the parent values in its segment. When needed, we push updates down or query the final parent of a node.
However, maintaining LCA under dynamic parent changes requires another layer: binary lifting is built on top of the final parent array. Since recomputing the full lifting table after every update is too expensive, we instead compute ancestors on demand using a “functional lifting” idea: when we query the parent of a node at some height, we repeatedly resolve its current parent through the segment tree rather than through a static array.

Why it works
