Over d steps, this creates a huge branching process: the red token already has branching factor up to the degree of each node, and the blue token has up to O(n) choices per level. Even with memoization over states (r, b, depth), the state space explodes because each depth level introduces O(n²) possible pairs of positions, leading to an overall complexity on the order of n³ in dense consideration.
The key observation is that the blue token’s position is almost unconstrained across nodes of the same depth. The only thing that matters at a given depth is the value it chooses, not its identity or ancestry. This collapses all blue states at a given depth into a single decision: pick either the maximum or minimum value present at that depth, depending on what benefits the current red position.
Once this is recognized, the problem separates cleanly. The red token must choose a root-to-leaf path. For each vertex on that path, the contribution at its depth depends only on its value and the best or worst value available among all nodes at that depth. Thus each node can be assigned a fixed weight, and the problem reduces to selecting a maximum-weight root-to-leaf path.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We first compute the depth of every node using a simple traversal from the root. Since all leaves are at the same depth, we know the number of moves is exactly this depth.
Next, for each depth level, we collect all node values appearing at that depth. From this collection we extract two quantities: the minimum value and the maximum value at that depth. These represent the only two meaningful choices for the blue token at that level, since any intermediate value can never improve an absolute difference against a fixed red value more than one of the extremes.
For each node v, we assign a weight based on its depth. This weight represents the best possible contribution when the red token is at v and the blue token chooses optimally at that depth. Concretely, the weight is the maximum of the two possible absolute differences: one with the minimum value at that depth and one with the maximum value at that depth.
We then perform a tree dynamic programming step. Starting from the root, we compute the best possible sum along any downward path. At each node, we propagate the best achievable sum to its children, adding the node’s weight.
Finally, among all leaves, we take the maximum accumulated value.
The critical idea is that once node weights are fixed, the red token’s movement becomes an independent path optimization problem on a weighted tree.
Why it works
At every depth, the blue token’s position can be chosen independently of previous decisions, so long as it respects depth progression. This removes any dependency structure across levels for the blue token. Therefore, for any fixed red node at that depth, the best blue response is always one of the two extremes of that level. Since this choice does not affect future possibilities, we can precompute it.
The remaining dependency is purely structural: the red token must follow edges, so it defines a single root-to-leaf path. The total score decomposes into a sum of independent per-node contributions along that path, which guarantees that maximizing the path sum yields the optimal global solution.
