A naive approach might try to explicitly count all distinct paths from 1 to n. That already becomes exponential because branching is possible at many nodes. Even a memoized path-counting approach is insufficient because the number of distinct ways is not the number of paths in a DAG, it is the number of reachable subsets induced by choice combinations.
A second naive idea is to try every subset of nodes to zero out and check uniqueness. This is impossible because there are 2^n configurations.

The key observation is that the structure of valid plays is monotone in index: moves always go forward, so the graph is a DAG. This allows dynamic programming over positions.
Instead of counting all ways, we reverse the problem. A configuration has exactly one winning way if and only if from node 1, every reachable node has a unique continuation path to n. In other words, the graph induced by allowed edges must form a single chain-like structure when restricted to “useful” transitions.
We interpret this as selecting a set of nodes that remain “active branching points.” Every node i has an interval of reachable next nodes [i+1, i+a[i]]. If we keep multiple outgoing choices from a node, we create branching, so to preserve uniqueness, each node can contribute at most one “useful outgoing choice” in the final structure.
We define dp[i] as the minimum number of deletions needed so that starting from i, there is exactly one valid continuation to n under forced structure constraints. We compute transitions by choosing the unique next node j that i will connect to in the final structure, and forcing all other outgoing options either to be removed via zeroing or made irrelevant.
This becomes a shortest path in a layered DAG where choosing an edge i → j has a cost equal to the number of nodes in (i, j) that must be destroyed to eliminate alternative branching routes.
The crucial simplification is that once we fix a “primary path,” all nodes that can create alternative branches into this path must be turned into zero to avoid creating second ways. This converts the problem into selecting a path from 1 to n that minimizes the number of nodes that can interfere with uniqueness.

Algorithm Walkthrough
