At each node, we would try all possible bandit paths downward, and for each such path simulate how citizens redistribute across outgoing edges in each round while maintaining optimal adversarial behavior. This quickly becomes intractable because the number of states grows exponentially with the number of nodes. Even if we abstract citizens as counts, the branching decisions of both sides interact at every level, leading to a combinatorial explosion.

The key simplification comes from reversing perspective. Instead of thinking about dynamic movement round-by-round, we ask a static question: if the bandit commits to a particular root-to-leaf path, how many citizens can the citizens prevent him from collecting on that path?

Citizens can always redistribute upward along subtrees to avoid a chosen branch, but they are constrained by flow capacity: at each node, only a limited number of citizens can be “pushed away” before they inevitably accumulate along the bandit’s chosen path. This creates a classic greedy accumulation structure.

If we consider a fixed node, the bandit will eventually reach it only if he chooses that branch. Citizens below can try to push upward, but once the number of citizens exceeds what can be rerouted into other subtrees, the excess is forced into the bandit’s path. This leads to a bottom-up greedy DP: each node returns the number of citizens that inevitably flow upward if the bandit avoids that subtree.

We process the tree from leaves upward. At each node, we combine contributions from children. Each child produces a “surplus” value representing unavoidable citizens that cannot be redistributed away from the bandit if he goes through this node. The node sums these values with its own citizens, but the bandit will only be forced to collect the excess beyond what can be pushed into alternative branches.

This reduces the problem to computing subtree aggregations and taking greedy maxima along paths, which is linear over the tree.

Algorithm Walkthrough

Why it works

The core invariant is that each node’s computed value represents the maximum number of citizens that can be forced through that node if the bandit optimally chooses a path passing through it. Citizens can redistribute among subtrees to avoid concentration, but at every branching point, exactly one subtree can be avoided by the bandit, meaning all others must contribute. This “sum minus largest child” structure captures the optimal split between avoidance and forced accumulation. Because every subtree is solved independently before being combined, no later decision can change earlier computed inevitabilities.
