The constraint n ≤ 3 * 10^5 immediately rules out any solution that explicitly checks all pairs of indices or scans segments repeatedly. Any approach with quadratic behavior over n is infeasible. Even O(n log n) needs careful structuring, since transitions between states must be efficient.
A naive dynamic programming over all pairs would consider every reachable (i, j) transition and check the maximum and minimum on the segment between them. That already breaks because segment checks alone are linear, making the total cubic in the worst case.
A more subtle failure case appears when heights are alternating, for example 1 100 2 99 3 98 .... Many segment queries look valid depending on interpretation, but most are not, and incorrect pruning strategies that only look at local neighbors will incorrectly assume long jumps are possible.

A brute-force solution would treat each index as a node in a graph and connect i to every j > i if the jump condition holds. Then a shortest path search would solve the problem. The correctness is straightforward because every valid jump is represented as an edge.
The issue is construction. Checking whether a jump (i, j) is valid requires computing the maximum and minimum inside (i+1, j-1). Even with a segment tree, this leads to O(n^2 log n) edge generation in the worst case, since there can be quadratically many valid transitions.
The key structural insight is that validity depends only on whether the segment is strictly above or strictly below both endpoints. This means that for a fixed i, only a small set of candidates j matter: those where the next “change point” in monotonic envelope occurs. Instead of checking all j, we can compress the array into a structure where each element connects only to nearest “blocking” positions in terms of next greater and next smaller elements.
This leads to a graph where each node has only a constant number of meaningful outgoing edges derived from monotonic stack neighbors. Once this reduced graph is built, the problem becomes a shortest path in an unweighted graph, solvable with BFS.

Algorithm Walkthrough

4. Maintain a distance array initialized to infinity, set dist[1] = 0, and propagate BFS updates whenever a shorter path is found.
5. The BFS guarantees that the first time we reach node n, we have used the minimum number of jumps.
The reason this works is that any valid long jump can be decomposed into a sequence of jumps that always move through these boundary-critical indices without increasing the number of steps. Any shortcut that skips them does not create new reachability beyond what BFS already captures.
Why it works
The discrete jump condition depends only on whether the interval between two endpoints is entirely above or entirely below both endpoints. This condition changes only when encountering a local extremum relative to the segment structure.
Monotonic stack boundaries capture exactly these extremal constraints. Any long-range valid jump must preserve ordering relative to these extremes, which forces the jump endpoints to align with next greater or next smaller transitions. Since every feasible transition respects these structural pivots, restricting the graph to them preserves all shortest paths.
