Problem Understanding
We are given a graph where every edge already knows its endpoints, but not all edges are allowed to choose their direction freely. Some edges are already directed and must stay exactly as they are, while the remaining edges are undirected and can be oriented however we want. The task is to assign directions to all undirected edges so that the final directed graph contains no directed cycle.
The output is not just a yes/no decision. If it is possible, we must also output a full orientation of every edge, including those that were already directed, such that the resulting directed graph is acyclic.
The structure of the constraints already suggests that any solution must be close to linear in the size of the graph. With up to 2·10^5 vertices and edges over all test cases, anything quadratic, such as repeatedly checking cycles after each edge assignment or trying all orientations, is completely infeasible. The solution must essentially perform a single or a few graph traversals per test case.
A key difficulty is that directed edges impose strict ordering constraints between vertices, while undirected edges are flexible but must be assigned consistently with those constraints. A naive intuition might be to ignore directed edges first, build a topological order of the underlying undirected graph, and then orient edges accordingly. This fails immediately when directed edges already force a partial ordering that conflicts with a naive DFS order.
For example, consider three nodes 1 → 2 → 3 already directed, and an undirected edge between 3 and 1. Any attempt to assign a topological order that ignores the directed chain will eventually produce a contradiction if the order places 3 before 1 or vice versa. The directed edges define a rigid partial order that must be respected globally.
The central issue is therefore how to merge fixed directed constraints with flexible undirected edges in a way that preserves acyclicity.
Approaches
A brute-force approach would be to treat every undirected edge as having two possible directions and attempt to assign directions while checking for cycles. Even if we use backtracking with DFS, in the worst case there are 2^(m0) possibilities where m0 is the number of undirected edges. With m up to 2·10^5, this is completely impossible.
Another naive idea is to compute a topological order of the directed edges alone, then orient every undirected edge from earlier to later in that order. The issue is that directed edges may not define a complete order over all vertices, and more importantly, they may not be acyclic in the first place. If the directed edges already contain a cycle, no solution exists, and this must be detected.
The key observation is that we only need a topological ordering consistent with all already-directed edges. Once we have such an order, every undirected edge can be safely oriented from earlier to later in that order, because this guarantees no backward edge can appear, and thus no cycle can be created.
This reduces the problem to checking whether the directed subgraph is acyclic and, if so, constructing a topological order over it. After that, we ignore undirected edges during the ordering phase and only assign their directions afterward.
The only subtlety is that directed edges alone might not reach all nodes via traversal, so we must still include all vertices in the topological sort.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We process each test case independently.
- Build a graph using only the directed edges, storing them as adjacency lists and also tracking indegrees. This graph represents fixed constraints.
- Run a topological sort (Kahn’s algorithm) on this directed graph. We repeatedly pick nodes with indegree zero and remove them, producing an ordering of vertices.
- If we cannot include all vertices in the topological order, the directed edges contain a cycle, and it is impossible to satisfy the requirement. We output NO immediately. The reason is that any cycle formed by fixed edges cannot be broken by orienting undirected edges.
- If we successfully obtain a topological order, assign a rank to each vertex based on its position in this order.
- Now process all edges. For every directed edge, we keep it unchanged. For every undirected edge (u, v), we compare their ranks. If rank[u] < rank[v], we direct it u → v, otherwise we direct it v → u.
- Output the final directed edge list.
The reason step 5 works is that the topological order guarantees that all directed edges go forward in the order. Therefore, orienting undirected edges consistently with this order ensures they also go forward.
Why it works
The topological order is a linear extension of all constraints imposed by already-directed edges. Any directed path in the original graph must strictly increase in this order. Since every undirected edge is oriented to respect this same ordering, every edge in the final graph goes from a lower-ranked vertex to a higher-ranked vertex. A directed cycle would require a strictly increasing sequence of ranks that eventually returns to the starting node, which is impossible.
Thus, the constructed graph is acyclic, and if a cycle existed in the fixed directed edges, it is correctly detected in step 3.

The directed edges are first isolated to build the constraint graph. The Kahn’s algorithm section constructs a valid linear order or detects a cycle if the queue empties early.
The position array encodes the final ordering so that comparisons between endpoints of undirected edges are O(1). This avoids recomputing ordering logic during edge processing.

Edge Cases
A subtle case is when the graph has no directed edges at all. In this situation, the directed subgraph is empty, so every vertex starts with indegree zero. The topological order becomes any permutation produced by the queue order. The algorithm still works because every undirected edge is oriented consistently with this arbitrary order, guaranteeing no cycles.
Another case is a disconnected graph where different components have independent directed constraints. Kahn’s algorithm naturally interleaves components in any valid order. Since undirected edges are always oriented according to the global order, edges between components cannot form cycles across components.
A failure scenario would be attempting to orient undirected edges before establishing a full topological order. For example, if one tries to greedily assign directions during DFS without global ordering, it is easy to create a back-edge that forms a cycle later. The global ordering avoids this by fixing a complete linear structure first and only then making local decisions.
