Problem Understanding

We are allowed to repeatedly merge two towers by taking all discs from one tower and placing them onto another, but only in a way that preserves valid stacking rules: a disc can only be placed onto a tower if the current top disc of that tower is larger than it. A merge operation effectively means we are reorganizing how discs are grouped, eventually aiming to end with a single tower containing everything.
The cost we care about is not the number of moves inside a tower, but the number of such tower-merge operations needed in an optimal strategy to end up with a single valid tower.
After each query, two existing towers are merged into one, and we must report the difficulty of the entire current configuration, meaning the minimum number of operations needed to finish merging everything into one tower.
The constraints are large, with up to 200000 discs and towers, which immediately rules out any approach that simulates the merging process directly or repeatedly recomputes global structure from scratch. Anything quadratic per query is too slow, and even linear recomputation per query would be too expensive in the worst case.
A naive idea would be to simulate each query, rebuild all towers, and recompute the difficulty from scratch. That would require scanning all discs and checking relationships between them after each merge, leading to roughly O(nm) behavior, which is far beyond the limit.
A more subtle failure case for naive greedy thinking is assuming that merging two towers always increases difficulty by exactly one or can be computed locally without global structure. For example, even if two towers are merged, the effect can propagate through many adjacency relationships between discs far apart in index space.
The key difficulty is that the answer depends on how disc labels are partitioned into connected components over time, and merges affect many adjacency relationships simultaneously.
Approaches
If we ignore efficiency, we can think of each disc as sitting in a tower label. The final goal is to bring all discs into one valid decreasing stack. A useful way to think about difficulty is to consider the sequence of discs from 1 to n in increasing order and ask how fragmented this sequence is with respect to tower membership.
If two consecutive discs i and i+1 belong to different final merged towers, then at some point they must be separated in the construction process, contributing to the number of required operations. If they belong to the same final tower, no operation boundary is needed between them.
This suggests that the answer is closely related to counting “breaks” between consecutive indices i and i+1 where their current tower representatives differ.
Now consider what happens when we merge two towers. All discs inside both towers suddenly share the same identity. This means that some previously “bad” adjacent pairs become “good” because their endpoints now belong to the same merged component.
This leads to a dynamic connectivity problem over a fixed line of positions 1 to n, where each position belongs to a DSU component (its tower), and we maintain how many adjacent pairs cross component boundaries.
The brute-force method would recompute this adjacency count after every merge by scanning all n positions. This costs O(n) per query, giving O(nm) total, which is too large.
The key insight is that merging two DSU components only affects adjacency edges touching elements in the merged component. If we maintain, for each component, the list of positions it contains, then when merging two components we only need to inspect elements of the smaller component and check their neighbors i−1 and i+1.
This allows us to update the answer incrementally in nearly linear total time using union by size.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We model each tower as a DSU set over disc positions. Each disc position i stores which tower it currently belongs to. We also maintain a global counter of how many adjacent pairs (i, i+1) belong to different DSU sets.
Steps
- Initialize DSU where each tower is its own component, and store for each component the list of disc positions belonging to it.
This allows us to later update only affected positions when components merge. 2. Compute the initial difficulty by scanning i from 1 to n − 1 and counting how many times position i and i+1 belong to different towers.
This represents the number of boundaries between components in the initial configuration. 3. For each merge query (a, b), find the DSU representatives of both towers. 4. If they are already in the same component, the structure does not change and the current answer is simply printed. 5. Otherwise, ensure we always merge the smaller component into the larger one.
This guarantees that each disc position is moved at most logarithmically many times across merges. 6. For every position x in the smaller component, check its neighbors x−1 and x+1 if they exist. 7. For each neighbor check, if the neighbor belongs to a different component before merging, then this edge currently contributes 1 to the answer. After merging, both endpoints become part of the same component, so this contribution disappears, and we decrement the answer. 8. Move all elements of the smaller component into the larger one and perform the DSU union. 9. After processing, output the current answer.
Why it works
The key invariant is that the answer always equals the number of adjacent index pairs i and i+1 such that their DSU representatives are different. Every merge operation only changes DSU connectivity inside the merged components, and therefore only adjacency edges touching those components can change status. Since we explicitly inspect all such affected positions from the smaller component and update boundary contributions exactly once per affected edge, the counter always stays correct.
No other adjacency relation can change from equal to unequal, because merges only unify components and never split them.

The solution maintains DSU over towers and a per-component container of disc positions. The array t is reused to store current representative membership of each position. During merging, only elements in the smaller component are examined, and each adjacency update is handled locally.
A subtle point is that we only decrement the answer when we detect that an adjacency edge used to cross two different components but becomes internal after the merge. We never increment the answer during merges, since merging cannot create new separations.
