The constraint $n \le 2 \cdot 10^5$ means we cannot afford anything quadratic or even $O(n \log n)$ naive reconstruction if it relies on many per-position queries. The real limiting factor is not $n$, but the number of distinct blocks $k$. Since $k \le 25000$, the intended solution must spend roughly constant or logarithmic work per block, but with a very small constant, because only $4k$ queries are allowed.
A naive strategy would try to reconstruct values position by position. That fails immediately because each single position query is allowed, but $n$ can be $200{,}000$, far beyond the query budget.
Another naive idea is to repeatedly query prefixes or suffixes to peel off blocks. The issue is that the mode of a segment is not necessarily the boundary value of a block, it is simply the most frequent value in that segment. A block that is not the longest in a suffix will never be reported even though it exists, so naive greedy peeling breaks.
The key difficulty is that we must recover all contiguous value blocks while only being told the most frequent value in arbitrary ranges.
Approaches
A brute force reconstruction would query each index individually using $[i,i]$. This is correct because the mode of a single element is the element itself. However, it uses $n$ queries, which is far above the limit of $4k$, especially when $n$ can be much larger than $k$.
The structural insight comes from the fact that values form contiguous segments. If we ever isolate a segment that contains only one value, that segment is immediately solved. So the real problem becomes how to split the array into homogeneous segments using only mode queries.
The key observation is that when we query a segment $[l,r]$, we receive a candidate value $x$ that is the most frequent inside that segment. If the entire segment is not uniform, then there must be at least one position where the value differs from $x$. That guarantees that the segment can be split into two smaller segments, each strictly containing fewer “uncertainty regions”.
We exploit this by recursively dividing segments. For a segment $[l,r]$, we query it once. If it is uniform, we fill it directly. Otherwise, we split it into two halves and recurse. The crucial non-obvious fact is that each distinct value block can only become “responsible” for a bounded number of recursive segments before it is isolated, and thus the total number of queries remains linear in $k$, not in $n$.
This works because once a segment is homogeneous, it stops generating further queries. Every recursive split reduces the number of unresolved boundaries, and each boundary is charged only a constant number of times.

Algorithm Walkthrough

The array is a sequence of contiguous value blocks. A segment query returns the most frequent value inside that interval. If a segment is not uniform, it must contain at least one boundary between two blocks. Every recursive split crosses or isolates such a boundary, reducing the number of unresolved block interactions inside any segment. Once a segment lies fully inside a single block, it is detected immediately because the frequency equals the segment length.
Since each block can only be split a constant number of times before becoming isolated, the total number of recursive calls across all levels is proportional to the number of blocks $k$. This keeps the query count within $O(k)$, satisfying the $4k$ limit.
