The central trick is to identify the maximum element in the permutation. The maximum value n−1 has all bits set that any other number might contribute. This makes it uniquely useful because OR with n−1 always returns n−1. Once we locate an index holding n−1, we can recover every other value using targeted comparisons.
To find the index of n−1, we exploit a tournament-style elimination. We maintain a candidate index. When comparing two indices i and j, the OR result tells us which of p[i] or p[j] is larger in terms of bit coverage. Specifically, if we compare i with j and get value x, then whichever index corresponds to x OR something consistent with previous structure survives. By carefully structuring comparisons, we can isolate the index holding the maximum value in O(n) queries.
Once we have the maximum index mx, every other value p[i] can be recovered by querying (mx, i). Since p[mx] is n−1, the result is (n−1) OR p[i] = n−1, which alone does not help directly. Instead, we use a second known index with complementary structure. By first identifying a second element that differs in at least one bit, we can resolve each p[i] by comparing its OR results with both anchors and solving bitwise consistency.
A cleaner way is to first find the index of 0. The index containing 0 is special because OR with 0 returns the other operand unchanged. If we can locate 0, then querying (0, i) immediately reveals p[i] for all i.
To find 0, we again use elimination. Suppose we maintain a candidate c. For each i, we compare (c, i). If result equals p[c], then p[i] must be 0 in all bits where p[c] has 0, but since values are distinct, this structure allows us to identify the only element that never increases OR results when paired.
After identifying the zero index, reconstruction becomes trivial: every query (0, i) returns p[i] directly.

Algorithm Walkthrough

The correctness hinges on the fact that only 0 is a neutral element under OR. Any other value has at least one set bit, and due to the permutation covering all numbers, there exists another value that introduces a different bit pattern causing a strictly larger OR result, which forces elimination of incorrect candidates.
