A brute-force view would try to model each operation as moving tokens around inside chosen subtrees, effectively simulating all possible subsets and permutations. Even if we restrict ourselves to choosing optimal subsets, the number of possibilities per node is exponential in subtree size, since every subset is valid and every permutation is allowed. This quickly becomes intractable.

The key observation is that the operation does not really depend on identity of nodes, only on counts of 0s and 1s. Inside any subtree operation, we are effectively redistributing supply and demand of bits, and the cost depends on where we choose to perform the operation. If we choose a higher ancestor, we pay a smaller per-node cost compared to performing multiple local operations lower in the tree.

This leads to a greedy idea: at each node, we want to decide how many mismatches between initial and target configurations in its subtree must be “resolved” through this node. Each node behaves like a potential “conveyor” that can match surplus and deficit from its children. The optimal strategy is to combine mismatches bottom-up, always accounting for the cheapest place where pairing can happen.

This reduces the problem to a tree DP where each node computes how many excess 0→1 and 1→0 conversions remain in its subtree, and the minimal cost to resolve internal pairs locally.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We root the tree at node 1 and perform a postorder DFS. For each node, we track how many mismatches of each type remain unresolved in its subtree.

We define two quantities per node: how many nodes in its subtree need a 0 that currently have a 1, and how many need a 1 that currently have a 0.

  1. Perform DFS from the root so that each node aggregates information from its children before processing itself. This ensures we always know the full mismatch structure of a subtree before deciding how to resolve it at the current node.
  2. For each node, compute its local mismatch based on its own initial and target bits. If it is 0→1, it contributes one demand for a 1. If it is 1→0, it contributes one demand for a 0. This isolates the node’s requirement independent of subtree structure.
  3. Merge child results into the current node by summing their mismatch counts. At this stage, we have a complete view of all unresolved demands in the subtree.
  4. At node u, we attempt to “match” opposite mismatches coming from children. A 0→1 mismatch can cancel a 1→0 mismatch because within the subtree we can shuffle values arbitrarily. The number of such cancellations is the minimum of the two counts.
  5. Each cancellation represents a pair of nodes that can be fixed using an operation rooted at u. The cost of fixing one such pair is 2 * a_u only if we explicitly simulate pairing, but the optimal interpretation is that each unit of flow through u contributes cost proportional to a_u. We therefore accumulate cost based on how many mismatches pass through u after local cancellations.
  6. After cancellation, remaining mismatches are passed to the parent, because they cannot be resolved fully within this subtree and must be handled higher in the tree where operations are potentially cheaper.

A crucial realization is that every mismatch must travel up until it finds a place where it can be paired. The cheapest such place is the highest possible node on the path that still contains both types of mismatches. This is why aggregation in a DFS works.

Why it works

The algorithm maintains the invariant that after processing a node u, all mismatches in its subtree are represented only as net surplus of one type, meaning we never carry both types upward simultaneously when they could have been paired locally. Since operations allow arbitrary permutation inside a subtree, any pairing that could be done locally is always at least as good as delaying it upward, and delaying only increases cost because ancestor costs are not smaller in general. This ensures that every cancellation is performed at the highest beneficial point, producing a globally minimal cost, while feasibility is enforced by ensuring that unmatched requirements do not remain unresolved at the root.
