The key abstraction is that we are walking on an undirected grid graph where edges are unit segments between integer coordinates. Each edge has a state: unseen or seen. The cost depends only on this state at the moment we traverse it.
The constraints allow up to 10^5 total moves across all test cases. This rules out any solution that tries to recompute whether a segment was visited using scanning or hashing over all past segments per step. A linear per test case approach is required, with expected O(1) average operations per move.
A naive but easy-to-miss issue is handling edges as directed rather than undirected. For example, moving from (0,0) to (0,1) is the same segment as moving back from (0,1) to (0,0). A solution that stores only directed edges will incorrectly count revisits as new segments.
Another subtle issue is coordinate representation. Since the path can revisit points, but we care about edges, not nodes, tracking only visited coordinates is insufficient. For example, returning to a previously visited vertex via a new edge still costs 5 seconds if that edge was never used.
Approaches
A brute-force idea is straightforward. We simulate the skier step by step, maintaining a set of all previously used segments. Each move defines a segment between the current position and the next. For each segment, we check whether it exists in the set. If not, we add it and add 5 to the answer; otherwise, we add 1.
This approach is correct because it directly follows the rule definition. The issue is efficiency only. Insertion and lookup in a hash set are average O(1), so this already looks optimal. The hidden complexity is in representing segments robustly. If we represent segments incorrectly, we may need to normalize or recompute keys inefficiently.
The key insight is that the grid structure lets us encode each segment uniquely using its endpoints, normalized so order does not matter. Once we do this, each step becomes a constant-time set operation, and the simulation becomes linear in the length of the path.
The transition from brute force to optimal is therefore not about reducing asymptotic complexity, but about choosing a representation of edges that makes each operation constant time and unambiguous.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We simulate the skier while tracking visited segments in a hash set.
- Start at coordinate (0, 0) with total time initialized to 0. We need a reference point because every move is relative to the current position.
- For each character in the movement string, compute the next coordinate by applying the direction delta. This gives a unit segment between the current and next position.

Why it works
