This rule is local, but the number of queries is large and the time parameter can be extremely large, up to $10^{18}$. That immediately rules out simulating steps directly. Even one query can require iterating many transitions, so any approach that evolves the grid over time is impossible.

The key difficulty is that the grid is not independent per cell. A cell’s behavior depends on nearby structure, and changes propagate.

A common failure case appears when assuming periodic behavior too early. For example, in alternating checkerboard patterns, no cell ever flips, but in clustered regions flips propagate outward in waves. A naive approach might try to simulate until stabilization, but stabilization time can be linear in $n+m$ per cell, which is too large globally.

Another subtle issue is assuming independence of queries. Each query depends on the same evolving system, so precomputation must handle all cells simultaneously.

Approaches

A direct simulation computes each step by scanning all cells and applying the rule. Each iteration costs $O(nm)$. Since values of $p$ go up to $10^{18}$, even detecting cycles is not reliable because different regions stabilize at different times and global periodicity does not hold cleanly.

The crucial observation is that the process is equivalent to a multi-source BFS on a graph where cells that already have at least one same-colored neighbor are “active” immediately. Cells surrounded by opposite colors behave differently from cells in homogeneous regions.

Instead of simulating forward in time, we reverse the viewpoint. Each cell becomes determined by how quickly it can be “influenced” by a conflicting neighbor. Cells that already have a same-colored neighbor start flipping early, while isolated cells stay stable longer.

This leads to computing the earliest time each cell becomes unstable. After that moment, behavior becomes periodic with period 2, because a cell with at least one same-colored neighbor alternates deterministically.

Thus the problem reduces to precomputing a distance-to-stability for every cell using BFS, then answering queries in $O(1)$.

The brute-force works because it directly follows rules, but fails when $p$ is large since propagation is global and repeated per query. The BFS reduction works because the instability time depends only on local structure and is independent of query count.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. For every cell, check whether it has at least one adjacent cell with the same initial color. Mark such cells as initially “unstable.” These cells will start flipping behavior early.
  2. Initialize a BFS queue with all unstable cells at time 0. This is valid because instability spreads outward: a cell becomes unstable once it has a neighbor already unstable or same-colored influence reaches it.
  3. Run BFS over the grid. For each cell, compute the minimum time when it becomes unstable. This propagates in layers because instability spreads one step per iteration.
  4. Store this time in an array dist[i][j]. If a cell is never reached, it remains stable forever.
  5. For each query $(i, j, p)$, compare $p$ with dist[i][j].
  6. If $p < dist[i][j]$, the cell never started flipping, so its color is unchanged from initial.
  7. If $p \ge dist[i][j]$, the cell is in alternating regime, so its color at time $p$ depends only on parity of $p - dist[i][j]$.

The invariant is that BFS computes the exact earliest time at which each cell becomes affected by a neighbor of the same color. After that moment, updates are deterministic and periodic with period 2. Because influence spreads one layer per time step, BFS distance exactly matches time evolution.

A common implementation mistake is forgetting that time comparison must be p <= dist[i][j] versus strict <. The correct boundary is that instability starts at time dist, so at exactly that time the first flip occurs.

Edge Cases
