The key difficulty is that the score of a position is not local. When some positions are already occupied, they change how many starting indices “point” to each remaining position, so every step depends on the evolving structure of free gaps in the array.

The constraints push strongly toward linear or near-linear behavior per test. The total length across tests is at most 100000, so any solution that is quadratic in a single test will already fail. At each step, we would recompute for every index j the next free position to its right, aggregate counts, identify all currently free positions with maximum count, and check whether the required position from the permutation belongs to that set. This is conceptually correct but computationally expensive. Each step requires scanning the whole array and rebuilding next-free pointers, leading to a cubic or at best quadratic behavior across all steps.

The bottleneck is that the score structure changes in a very controlled way. Once we look at what the score actually measures, it becomes clear that it depends only on contiguous blocks of free positions. Inside a block of consecutive free indices, most positions behave identically, and only the boundaries of these blocks can achieve the maximum score.

This reduces the problem from per-index reasoning to per-segment reasoning. Instead of tracking individual scores, we maintain segments of consecutive free positions. Each segment has a dominant choice: one of its ends. The generator always chooses among segment ends of the largest segment available.

So the problem becomes a greedy process over segments: repeatedly take a segment with maximum length, verify that the next required number in the permutation lies at one of its ends, then split the segment accordingly.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We reinterpret the process in reverse of its intuitive complexity. Instead of recomputing scores, we track only where free space is concentrated.

We maintain all currently free indices as disjoint segments. Each segment represents a contiguous interval that has not yet been occupied by chosen elements of the permutation.

At any moment, the generator effectively prefers segments with the largest “influence”, which corresponds to segment length.

Steps

  1. Initialize a single segment covering the entire range from 1 to n. This represents that initially every position is available and equally valid.
  2. Build a structure that can always retrieve the segment with maximum length. This is necessary because at every step the generator considers only globally best candidates, not local ones.
  3. Process the permutation in the order it is constructed. At step i, we are required to place number i at position p[i].
  4. Locate the segment that currently contains p[i]. If p[i] is not inside any free segment, the permutation is immediately invalid because that position is already occupied.
  5. Among all segments, identify the one with maximum length. Only positions inside this segment can be chosen at this step.
  6. Check whether p[i] is one of the two endpoints of this maximum segment. If it is not, the permutation cannot be produced, since interior positions never become optimal under the scoring rule.
  7. Remove p[i] from its segment. This splits the segment into at most two smaller segments, which are reinserted into the structure.

The repeated splitting ensures that the free space is always correctly represented as disjoint intervals.

Why it works

Inside any free segment, only boundary positions can accumulate maximal score because interior positions always have identical local structure with immediate neighbors, giving them minimal contribution. As segments evolve, only endpoints ever become globally competitive, and the generator’s decision is fully determined by segment lengths.

The invariant is that the set of free positions is always represented exactly as disjoint segments, and the only candidates for selection at each step are endpoints of the largest segment.
