Once a vertex is placed inside another without intersection, all its neighbors must remain inside consistent regions, and this propagates along a single chain. Branching does not allow independent nesting because siblings must remain separated, preventing them from both lying inside each other’s regions in different orders.

  1. Build the adjacency list of the tree from the input edges.
  2. Run a DFS or BFS from any arbitrary node, for example node 1, and find the farthest node from it. This works because in a tree, one endpoint of the diameter is always the farthest point from any starting node.

The first BFS is responsible only for locating a diameter endpoint, and it does not yet produce the answer. The second BFS is where the actual diameter length is measured. The final +1 is necessary because BFS distances count edges, while the nesting sequence counts vertices.
