Problem Understanding
We are given a rectangular grid where every cell represents a city, and each city has one of a small number of colors. From any city, Jaber can move in one second either to one of the four adjacent cells or to any other cell anywhere in the grid that has the same color as his current cell.
For each query, we are asked to compute the minimum time required to travel from one given cell to another under these movement rules.
The grid can be as large as 1000 by 1000, so up to one million nodes exist. The number of colors is at most 40, which is the key structural limitation. The number of queries can be as large as 100,000, which immediately rules out any per-query graph search such as BFS or Dijkstra on the full grid.
A direct shortest path search per query would cost on the order of O(nm) per query in the worst case, which is completely infeasible at 10^5 queries.
There are two non-obvious situations that make naive reasoning fail.
First, treating teleportation as “free global edges between all same-colored nodes” suggests building a graph with huge connectivity. A BFS per query would revisit the same large regions repeatedly and time out.
Second, ignoring teleportation and only using grid adjacency produces incorrect results. For example, if all cells of color 5 are spread across the grid, moving between distant regions of color 5 is effectively instantaneous, but a grid-only BFS would incorrectly measure long Manhattan distance.
Approaches
A brute force approach treats the grid as a graph with edges between adjacent cells and also edges between any two cells sharing the same color. From a source cell, we can run BFS until reaching the target. This is correct because every move has unit cost. The issue is the number of edges: a single color class may contain up to 10^6 nodes, making the implicit adjacency extremely dense. Even if we do not explicitly build all edges, BFS will still repeatedly traverse large connected components for every query. With up to 10^5 queries, this becomes far beyond feasible limits.
The key observation is that there are only at most 40 colors. Instead of reasoning about individual cells repeatedly, we compress the problem to a structure where each color is treated as a portal system. The grid edges still matter locally, but long-range movement happens through color transitions. This suggests precomputing shortest distances between important “interfaces” of the grid rather than recomputing everything per query.
A useful way to view the problem is to consider running a multi-source BFS for each color, computing distances from every cell to the nearest cell of each color. Since k is small, we can afford to precompute a distance table where for each color c we run BFS starting from all cells of color c simultaneously. This gives us the minimum grid-distance to reach a cell of color c from any position.
Once we know these distances, any path from u to v can be decomposed into three parts: moving from u to some cell of a chosen color c, teleporting within color c (cost zero), and then moving from a cell of color c to v. Thus, the answer becomes a minimization over all colors c of dist(u, c) + dist(v, c). We also include direct grid distance implicitly captured when c equals the color of u or v.
This reduces each query to scanning over at most 40 colors.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Read the grid and group all cells by their colors. This grouping is necessary because each color will act as a BFS source set.
- For each color c from 1 to k, run a multi-source BFS where all cells of color c are initially in the queue with distance 0. The BFS expands through four-directional adjacency. The result is a distance array dist_c[x][y], which stores the minimum grid steps required to reach any cell of color c.
- Store these k distance grids. Each BFS is independent, but all share the same grid structure and movement rules.
- For each query with endpoints u and v, initialize the answer as the Manhattan shortest path if we ignore teleportation, which is already covered implicitly by BFS layers through same-color sources.
- Then iterate over all colors c. For each color, compute dist_c[u] + dist_c[v] and update the answer with the minimum value.
- Output the final minimum for each query.
The reason the color iteration works is that teleportation allows us to “enter” a color anywhere and instantly jump within that color class, so every optimal path can be assumed to pass through at most one color transition point.
Why it works
Any valid path can be seen as alternating between grid moves and instantaneous jumps within a color class. Consider an optimal path from u to v. If it uses teleportation, then at some point it enters a color class c and possibly exits later. We can compress all movement inside color c into a single event because teleportation removes any cost of intra-color traversal. Therefore, the optimal strategy is equivalent to choosing a color c and minimizing the cost of reaching any cell of that color from u and then from that color to v. The BFS preprocessing guarantees that these entry costs are exact shortest path distances in the grid graph.

The preprocessing step builds k BFS layers, one per color. Each BFS computes shortest grid distance to any occurrence of that color. The query phase simply evaluates the best intermediate color. The initial Manhattan distance acts as a fallback upper bound.
The only subtle point is ensuring that BFS is multi-source from all cells of a color. Without this, distances would reflect distance from a single arbitrary representative rather than the closest possible entry point.
