We first cut the array at some position k, creating a left segment and a right segment. This condition is equivalent to saying that the left set contains some prefix of values {1, 2, ..., x} and the right contains {x+1, ..., n} for some x, but those values may be scattered initially due to permutation order. The only thing that matters is how we assign each value to the left or right set after paying movement costs.
The constraint n up to 2×10^5 means any O(n^2) or even O(n√n) approach will be too slow. We need something close to linear or n log n, and we should expect a solution that processes the permutation using prefix information or a sweep over potential split values.
A few subtle failure cases appear in naive reasoning. First, choosing a fixed split position k and greedily fixing elements locally can fail because an element’s optimal side depends on global ordering of values, not its position alone. For example, putting small values mostly on the right may later force expensive corrections when a larger split is chosen. Second, assuming we only need to fix “misplaced elements” relative to k is wrong because even correctly placed elements might still need to move when the optimal value threshold changes.
Approaches
A direct brute force strategy is to try every split point k. For each k, we consider the left segment as initially containing p₁…p_k and the right containing the rest. Then we decide, for every value, whether it should end up left or right to satisfy the final ordering constraint. Any value on the wrong side must be moved, contributing its cost.
For a fixed k, we can determine the optimal assignment by observing that there exists some threshold x such that values 1…x go left and x+1…n go right. If we try all possible x, we can compute cost by checking which elements violate the partition induced by x and k. This leads to a triple-layer loop: choose k, choose x, scan all elements. That is O(n^3) in the worst case, or O(n^2) even with optimizations, which is far too slow for n = 2×10^5.
The key observation is that the final condition depends only on a single threshold x, and the initial split k only determines which elements are already on the “correct side” relative to that threshold. Instead of fixing k first, we can invert the process: fix x first, and compute the best cost over all possible k.
For a fixed threshold x, elements with value ≤ x ideally belong to the left, and others to the right. If we look at the permutation, each position contributes either correctly or incorrectly depending on whether its value is on the correct side of the cut. As we move k from left to right, each element transitions from being on the right side to the left side, and its contribution to the cost changes in a predictable way.
We can maintain the cost difference dynamically. When we extend k, we are effectively moving p_k from the right group to the left group, and we update how expensive it is to satisfy the threshold constraint. This reduces the problem to computing a prefix sweep over k, while maintaining contributions of elements depending on whether they are ≤ x or > x. We repeat this for all x using a second sweep over value order.
This structure leads to a classic two-layer sweep: values define classification, positions define prefix evolution. The result is an O(n log n) solution using sorting of events or O(n) with careful accumulation and a Fenwick tree or prefix sums over value positions.

Algorithm Walkthrough

- Map each value v to its position pos[v] in the permutation. This lets us reason in value order instead of index order.

- For a fixed x, define an initial state where we cut the array at k = 0, meaning everything is on the right. We then gradually move k from 1 to n, shifting elements from right to left.
- Maintain two running sums: one representing cost if an element is currently in the wrong side relative to threshold x, and another tracking how this cost changes when elements cross the boundary at k.
- When k increases by one, we move element p_k into the left side. If p_k ≤ x, this movement fixes a potential violation, otherwise it creates one. We update the running cost accordingly.
- For each x, compute the minimum cost over all k during this sweep. This gives the best split point for that threshold.
- Repeat the process for all x efficiently by processing values in increasing order and updating contributions of their positions into a Fenwick tree or prefix structure.
Why it works
At any moment, the only decision that matters is whether a value is assigned to the left or right set. The final constraint enforces that this assignment must be monotone in value. That means the solution space is fully described by a single cutoff x.
For each x, varying k only changes which indices are currently on each side, but does not change which values belong to each side. The cost is always the sum of weights of elements that are on the wrong side. Since each element changes side exactly once as k moves, we can track its contribution incrementally without recomputing from scratch. This guarantees correctness because every valid final configuration corresponds to exactly one pair (x, k), and we evaluate the optimal cost over all such pairs.

The permutation is only used to locate where each value sits, and the weights are aggregated by value order.
The subtraction step active -= a[pos[x]] reflects moving value x from the “needs to be on the right side” pool into the “already correct” pool as the threshold increases.
The key subtlety is that we never explicitly simulate k in the code. The optimization comes from the fact that for any threshold, the best split point k is implicitly accounted for by considering all configurations through prefix consistency of the value partition.
