A subtle failure case for naive reasoning appears when you assume people act greedily. For example, if you think opponents always take the larger end, that is incorrect: they actively try to reduce your final outcome, which may mean sacrificing large values early to force worse structure later.

Another common pitfall is treating your position $m$ as static. In reality, every removal shifts the remaining array and changes what you will see, so the problem is about intervals evolving under deletions.

Approaches

A brute-force approach would simulate all possible decisions of uncontrolled players, while also trying all ways of choosing up to $k$ players to fix and assigning each fixed player a direction. For each configuration, we would simulate the entire game and record the value you get.

This quickly becomes infeasible. Even without control decisions, each of the $m-1$ opponents can choose left or right, leading to $2^{m-1}$ possibilities. Adding the choice of which $k$ players to control introduces combinatorial explosion on top of that.

The key observation is that the only thing that matters is the segment of the array that can still contain your answer when your turn arrives. Each earlier player reduces the current interval size by exactly one, and each move is either taking from left or right. So after $m-1$ moves, your position is always some subarray $[L, R]$ of length $n-(m-1)$, but which exact subarray depends entirely on the sequence of left/right choices.

Controlling a player removes uncertainty about one step in this sequence. If we think of the process as a sequence of $m-1$ binary decisions, we are allowed to fix up to $k$ of them. The remaining $m-1-k$ decisions are adversarial.

  3. Simulate the process in terms of how many bad elements remain in any interval that could reach your turn. We maintain a sliding window representing the segment that could remain after $m-1$ removals.
  4. Compute the minimum number of forced removals needed to eliminate all bad elements from the final interval. Each time a bad element appears at an extremity of a possible interval, adversaries can choose to preserve it unless we control that move.
  5. Count how many such “bad preservation opportunities” exist in the prefix and suffix relative to your position. Each uncontrolled opportunity corresponds to one adversarial choice that can potentially keep a bad element in play.
  6. If the number of such opportunities is at most $k$, then threshold $x$ is achievable. Otherwise it is not.
  7. Binary search over $x$ using the feasibility check, taking the maximum valid value.

Why it works

The key invariant is that every deviation that could preserve a value below $x$ corresponds to a single binary decision point in the removal sequence. Each such decision can only be neutralized by fixing one player’s behavior. Therefore, feasibility depends only on whether the number of harmful decision points is at most $k$, independent of exact ordering. This reduces the game from an exponential decision tree into a linear count of critical choices.
