Problem Understanding
We are maintaining a dynamic “recent chat list” of friends, represented as a permutation of the numbers from 1 to n. The list is ordered from most recent to least recent interaction. Whenever a message arrives from friend x, that friend is moved to the front of the list, and everyone who was ahead of x shifts one position to the right.
We start from the identity order, meaning friend i is initially at position i. After processing all m messages, every friend has been moved multiple times, sometimes forward and sometimes indirectly backward due to other friends being pulled to the front. Over the entire process, including the initial configuration and every intermediate configuration after each message, each friend occupies a sequence of positions.
The task is to compute, for each friend, the minimum and maximum position they ever occupy during this entire evolution.
The constraints n, m ≤ 3 · 10^5 immediately rule out any simulation that explicitly maintains the full permutation after each operation. A straightforward update of the array per message is already O(n) in the worst case, which leads to O(nm), far beyond feasible limits.
A subtle aspect of the problem is that positions are not independent. When one friend is moved to the front, it affects the positions of all others, so even tracking one friend naively still requires global updates.
A few edge cases expose what can go wrong with naive thinking. If all messages come from the same friend, say 1 repeated m times, then that friend stays at position 1 always, while others only get pushed back initially and then stabilize. A naive solution that recomputes positions only at message times might miss that positions change even when a friend is not directly involved.
Another edge case is when messages introduce a friend late, for example n = 5 and messages are [5, 4, 3, 2, 1]. The final order is reversed, and intermediate positions fluctuate heavily; the maximum position of early-moved friends often occurs long before the end.
The key difficulty is that positions depend on a global ordering that changes continuously.
Approaches
A brute-force approach is direct simulation. We maintain an array representing the permutation. For each message from friend x, we locate x in the array, shift all elements before it one step to the right, and place x at the front. While doing this, we can track positions of every friend at every step and update their minimum and maximum.
Locating x takes O(n) unless we maintain extra structure, and shifting also takes O(n). Each of m operations is therefore O(n), leading to O(nm), which is about 9 × 10^10 operations in the worst case. This is far too slow.
The crucial observation is that we do not actually need the full permutation evolution. We only need, for each friend, the set of positions they appear in at specific discrete times. The initial configuration contributes a known position i for friend i. After that, the only times positions change are immediately after a message, and at each such moment, only the prefix structure matters.
Instead of tracking the full permutation, we can track, for each friend, the last time they were accessed. The ordering at any moment is determined by recency: more recent messages correspond to smaller positions. A friend that has been seen recently is closer to the front.
This leads to a key reformulation: at any time, a friend’s position is determined by how many distinct “active” friends are more recent than it. Instead of simulating swaps, we simulate timestamps. Each message assigns a time index, and we later process these times in a structured way to compute rank dynamics.
To extract minimum and maximum positions, we treat the initial positions as fixed early times and then consider each message as potentially pushing a friend to position 1, producing its best (minimum) position. The maximum position occurs when it is as far back as possible, which happens before its first occurrence or when many distinct friends have been moved ahead of it.
We process contributions using ordering by last occurrence and use a Fenwick tree (or binary indexed tree) over time to compute how many “active” events precede each friend’s relevant segments.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We turn each friend’s behavior into a timeline problem.
- Record all message times for each friend. For friend x, store the list of indices where x appears in the message sequence. This is necessary because each appearance can potentially move x to the front and thus affect its minimum position.
- Define an “effective last activation time” for each friend as the last time it appears in the message list. This is the point after which no future operation directly improves its position.
- Compute the minimum position for each friend. A friend achieves position 1 exactly when it is processed in a message. If a friend never appears, its minimum position remains its initial position. Otherwise, its minimum is 1. This is immediate from the rule that every message moves that friend to the front.
- The harder part is computing the maximum position. We process friends in increasing order of their last occurrence time. We maintain a Fenwick tree that stores how many friends have already been “activated” at or before a given time.
- For a friend x, consider its initial position i. Before its first activation, all friends with earlier last occurrence times that are not x itself may already have been moved to the front and thus can shift x backward. We compute how many such activations occur before x’s first appearance and add that to i to estimate its worst position.
- We clamp this value by n because positions cannot exceed the array size.
- Update the Fenwick tree when processing each friend’s last occurrence so future queries correctly count active prefixes.
Why it works
The key invariant is that every time a friend appears in the message sequence, it becomes strictly more recent than all friends not yet processed in the ordering of last occurrences. Therefore, at any point, the set of friends that can appear ahead of a given friend is exactly the set of friends whose last activation is earlier in time and have already been accounted for. This reduces the dynamic permutation problem into counting how many such “earlier last activity” elements exist before a given threshold, which is exactly what the Fenwick tree maintains.
Because every forward movement corresponds to a discrete activation event and these events form a total order by time, we never double count or miss any contribution to a friend’s worst-case displacement.

The implementation starts by recording the first and last occurrence of each friend in the message sequence. This is essential because any friend that is ever messaged can immediately reach position 1, so its minimum is fixed at 1.
The Fenwick tree is built over message indices, not over friend IDs. Each activation corresponds to a last occurrence time, and we insert it when processing a friend in increasing order of last occurrence.
For each friend x, before activating it, we query how many activations occurred before its first appearance. That number corresponds to how many other friends have already been moved to the front earlier in the process and can contribute to pushing x backward in the worst case.
The final maximum is bounded by n because even in worst rearrangement, positions cannot exceed the list size.

Edge Cases
A friend that never appears in messages never moves to the front, so its minimum and maximum remain equal to its initial position. The algorithm handles this explicitly by checking last[x] = 0 and assigning both values directly. For example, in input n = 4 with messages [2, 3], friend 1 is never activated, so it stays at position 1.
A friend that appears in every message immediately attains minimum position 1. The Fenwick tree ensures that its maximum position is still computed based on earlier activations, not later ones, so it does not incorrectly accumulate future shifts.
When all messages are identical, say [1, 1, 1, 1], the structure of the Fenwick tree remains simple: only one activation time is inserted, and all other friends are unaffected. This prevents overcounting shifts that do not actually move any new element.
