The task is not to compute the union directly for the full set, but to remove exactly one interval and then compute how many disjoint continuous segments remain in the union of the remaining intervals. We want to choose the removed interval so that this number of connected components is as large as possible.
So the problem is about understanding how each interval contributes to merging previously separate covered regions. Removing an interval can potentially split one merged region into multiple pieces, but it can also do nothing if that interval was redundant.
The constraints are tight: up to 200,000 intervals total across all test cases. This immediately rules out any solution that recomputes a full union for every removal. A naive approach that recomputes merging after deleting each interval would require sorting and scanning for each of n deletions, leading to roughly O(n^2 log n) per test case, which is far too slow.
A subtle aspect is that intervals can be fully redundant or completely critical. For example, if an interval is completely covered by others, removing it changes nothing. Conversely, an interval that is the only bridge between two parts is critical.
Edge cases that break naive thinking include situations like all intervals being identical, where removing any one does nothing, or chains where each interval overlaps only slightly so that removing a single one splits a long connected component into two. A small example:

A naive “count merged components after removal” per index would still be too slow, but also a naive greedy idea like removing the smallest or largest interval fails because the structure depends on overlap connectivity, not length.
Approaches
A brute-force strategy is straightforward: for each interval, remove it, rebuild the union of the remaining intervals, and count how many disjoint merged segments exist. Building a union requires sorting intervals by left endpoint and scanning once, merging overlaps. This costs O(n log n) per test case. Doing it n times leads to O(n^2 log n), which at 2e5 total intervals is completely infeasible.
The key observation is that the union structure depends only on how intervals overlap when sorted by their endpoints. When intervals are sorted by left endpoint, the union is formed by greedily extending the current segment whenever an interval overlaps or touches the current active right boundary. Each time we fail to extend, a new component starts.
Now we ask what happens when we remove one interval. Removing an interval only matters if that interval was responsible for extending a merged component or connecting two parts. In a sweep sorted by left endpoint, there are moments where the current active coverage is determined by the maximum right endpoint among active intervals. The only intervals that matter are those that ever become the “max right endpoint contributor” at some point in the sweep.
This leads to a classic transformation: instead of recomputing unions for each deletion, we compute, for every interval, how many “union segments” it is essential to. If removing it causes a merge or split, that effect can be expressed using how many times it uniquely determines the active maximum coverage.
To make this precise, we process intervals sorted by left endpoint, but maintain not just one active right endpoint, but track how many intervals are currently contributing to the maximum right endpoint. If the maximum is unique, removing that interval reduces coverage extension and may create a split in the union. If the maximum is not unique, removing one copy does not change the union boundary.
This reduces the problem to tracking, for each interval, whether it is uniquely responsible for extending the union at some segment transition. Using coordinate compression and a sweep with a multiset or heap-like structure, we can maintain the current best and second best right endpoints and detect when the best is unique.
Each time the union extends to a new right boundary, that extension is attributed to at least one interval. If exactly one interval is responsible, removing it breaks that extension and increases the number of components by one.
Finally, the answer is baseline number of union segments minus 1 plus the best improvement gained by removing a uniquely critical interval.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We first compute the number of connected components in the union of all intervals. This is done by sorting intervals by left endpoint and greedily merging whenever the next interval overlaps the current one. Each time we start a new non-overlapping region, we increment the component count.
Next, we simulate this same sweep but enrich it with information about which interval is responsible for extending the current farthest right endpoint.
- Sort intervals by their left endpoint, and if equal, by right endpoint in descending order. This ensures that among intervals starting at the same point, the one extending further is processed first.
- Maintain a multiset (or two heaps) of right endpoints of “active candidates” in the current merged region. The goal is to always know the maximum and whether it is unique.
- Sweep through intervals. For each interval, we insert its right endpoint into the active structure.
- When the current interval starts after the end of the current merged segment, we finalize the previous component. This is where we record that a new union segment begins.
- While extending a segment, whenever the maximum right endpoint increases, we attribute this extension to the interval(s) achieving that maximum.
- If at any point the maximum right endpoint is achieved by exactly one interval, we mark that interval as “critical at this boundary”, meaning removing it would prevent this extension and split a component.
- After processing all intervals, we compute how many components we can gain by removing one interval. Each interval can contribute at most +1 improvement if it is uniquely responsible for a merge that would otherwise not happen.
- The final answer is the original number of components plus the best improvement over all intervals after deletion.
Why it works
The union structure changes only at points where the active maximum right endpoint changes across gaps between components. A component boundary exists exactly when no interval bridges the gap to extend coverage. Only intervals that uniquely define the maximum reach at a boundary can influence whether that boundary disappears after removal. Since overlaps are fully captured by the sweep’s maximum tracking, every merge or split event is determined solely by the identity of the interval achieving the maximum right endpoint at that moment, which makes per-interval influence independent and aggregatable.

In this case, removing one copy does not change the union at all, because another identical interval still preserves the same coverage.
