For each k, we imagine transforming the permutation using only adjacent swaps until there exists some interval of length k that reads exactly 1, 2, ..., k in order. We are not required to place this block at a fixed position, only that it appears somewhere. The task is to compute the minimum number of swaps needed for every prefix length k.

The key constraint is n up to 200000, which immediately rules out any solution that recomputes the answer independently for each k by simulating swaps or checking all placements. Any solution with quadratic behavior per k would be far beyond time limits. We need something that builds answers incrementally in roughly linear or logarithmic overhead per element.

A subtle point is that the block can be placed anywhere, so we are not anchoring positions. This makes naive “fix positions one by one” reasoning incorrect unless carefully justified. For example, if 1 and 2 are far apart, bringing them together might depend on intermediate elements that later get included when k increases, so greedy local reasoning on each k independently breaks easily.

A small failure case for naive thinking is a permutation like 2 1 3 4. For k = 2, the best is swapping 2 and 1 once. For k = 3, you might think we reuse previous structure, but inserting 3 changes the optimal placement of the block, so recomputation is necessary unless we find a global structure that tracks contributions correctly.

The real challenge is that we need to understand how the cost evolves when extending k to k+1, rather than recomputing from scratch.

Approaches

We start from the brute force idea. For a fixed k, we try every possible segment of length k, and compute the cost to transform the values 1..k into that segment in sorted order using adjacent swaps. Since adjacent swaps correspond to inversion distance, this cost is equivalent to counting how far the positions of 1..k are from being consecutive in some order.

If we fix a segment [l, l+k-1], we can compute the cost by summing absolute deviations after sorting positions of 1..k, but doing this for all l and all k leads to a huge cost. Even computing cost for a single k naively costs O(n log n) or O(n), and doing it for all k leads to O(n^2), which is impossible for n = 200000.

The key observation is to shift perspective from segments in value space to positions in the permutation. Let pos[x] be the index of value x in the permutation. For a fixed k, we are choosing positions pos[1], ..., pos[k] and trying to make them consecutive in the array. The minimal adjacent swap cost to compress these positions into a block equals the sum of distances to a median when we transform them into consecutive integers.

More concretely, if we take the sorted positions of 1..k as a sequence a1 < a2 < ... < ak, then after shifting them into a consecutive block, the optimal cost becomes:

sum |ai - (base + i)| for some base, which reduces to minimizing sum |(ai - i) - base|. This becomes a classic median minimization problem on the transformed array bi = ai - i.

Thus, for each k, we maintain the multiset of bi values and we want the sum of absolute deviations from its median. The challenge is updating this structure as k increases by inserting a new value in logarithmic time.

We can maintain two heaps (or a balanced structure) to keep track of median and maintain prefix sums, allowing us to compute the cost in O(log n) per insertion. Each time we add k, we insert pos[k] - k into the structure and update the answer.

This reduces the problem to dynamic maintenance of median and sum of absolute deviations.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We maintain a multiset of transformed values bi = pos[i] - i for i from 1 to k. We also maintain its median and support fast computation of sum of absolute deviations.

  1. Precompute pos[x] for every value x in the permutation. This allows constant-time access to where each number currently sits.
  2. Define bi = pos[i] - i. This transformation converts the “make consecutive block” condition into a geometry problem on a single numeric array. The reason this works is that shifting a block removes the linear offset i.
  3. Maintain two heaps: a max heap for the lower half of bi values and a min heap for the upper half. Alongside them, maintain running sums of both halves.
  4. For each k from 1 to n, insert bk into the structure. After insertion, rebalance heaps so that their sizes differ by at most one and the max heap contains the median.
  5. After each insertion, compute the median m as the top of the max heap. Compute cost as:

sum_right - m * len(right) + m * len(left) - sum_left.

This expression comes directly from splitting absolute deviations around the median: elements on the right contribute (x - m), elements on the left contribute (m - x). 6. Store this cost as f(k).

The reason this is correct is that among all ways to align the chosen positions into consecutive slots, the optimal alignment minimizes the sum of absolute deviations of shifted positions. That objective is exactly minimized at the median of the transformed values bi. Since we maintain the median dynamically, each k is computed optimally.

Why it works

The crucial invariant is that for each k, the structure stores exactly the multiset {pos[i] - i | 1 ≤ i ≤ k}, and the maintained median splits this set into two halves minimizing L1 deviation. The cost function of forming a consecutive block is equivalent to minimizing sum |bi - base| over all integer shifts base, which is solved by the median. Since insertion preserves correctness of the multiset and rebalancing preserves median correctness, each f(k) is computed exactly.
