The key condition is very strong: after removing a chosen node, all resulting components must be structurally identical trees. Not just the same size, but isomorphic as rooted unlabeled trees, meaning there exists a bijection between their vertices that preserves adjacency.
If such a node exists, we call it a valid cutting point. Among all valid cutting points, we want the maximum number of components created. If no valid node exists, we output -1.
The input is just a tree, so there are no cycles and exactly N−1 edges. The challenge is purely about tree structure symmetry around a node.
The constraint N ≤ 4000 suggests that O(N³) or anything with heavy repeated subtree comparisons is risky, while O(N² log N) or O(N²) with hashing is acceptable. Since we may need to compare many subtrees for each node, naive isomorphism checks between all pairs of components will be too slow without reuse or hashing.
A subtle failure case appears when a node has identical-looking subtrees but their shapes differ slightly deeper down. A naive approach that compares only sizes or degrees would incorrectly accept such cases. Another failure case is assuming that if two children subtrees match locally, the whole forest matches globally without checking deeper structure.
Approaches
A brute-force idea is to try every node as a potential cut point. For each node u, we remove it and obtain k subtrees rooted at its neighbors. Then we compare every pair of these k trees for isomorphism. If all are identical, we record k.
Checking whether two trees are isomorphic can be done via hashing or canonical encoding, but even with hashing, doing this from scratch for every pair and every node leads to about O(N²) nodes times O(N) comparison per pair, which becomes too slow in worst cases.
The key observation is that we do not need full rerooted comparisons for every candidate. What we really need is a canonical representation of every rooted subtree in the tree. If we root the tree somewhere, every node can be assigned a hash representing the structure of its subtree.
Then, when we consider removing a node u, each neighbor v of u corresponds to a rooted subtree obtained by taking v as root and excluding u. That subtree’s structure is exactly the rooted subtree at v with parent u removed, which can be computed from parent-child DP.
Thus, the problem reduces to: for every node u, collect hashes of all its adjacent subtrees (each neighbor contributes one subtree), and check whether all hashes are identical. If yes, the degree of u is a candidate answer.
To compute subtree hashes efficiently, we do a tree DP with rerooting or parent-aware hashing. A standard approach is to compute a rooted tree at 1, compute children hashes bottom-up, and then propagate information so that each node knows the hash of the component formed when going into each neighbor direction.
We can compute directional hashes using rerooting DP: for each node, we maintain a multiset of child hashes, and also compute an “upward” contribution from its parent. Then each edge (u, v) yields a hash of the component containing v when u is removed.
Finally, for each node u, we examine all neighbor-direction hashes. If they are all equal, u is valid and contributes degree(u). We take maximum.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We root the tree arbitrarily at node 1.
- Compute a rooted representation for each node’s subtree using hashing from children to parent. For each node u, compute a hash that represents the structure of the subtree rooted at u. This bottom-up pass ensures every subtree has a canonical signature.
- Build adjacency-based information so we can compute, for each directed edge u → v, the hash of the component containing v after removing u. This is necessary because removing u splits the tree into multiple rooted pieces, not just subtrees rooted at children in a fixed root orientation.
- Perform a rerooting traversal. When moving from parent u to child v, we remove v’s contribution from u’s subtree hash and replace it with the “outside” contribution, allowing us to compute the correct hash for the component rooted at v when u is removed.
- For every node u, gather the hashes corresponding to each neighbor v (i.e., each component formed after removing u). We check whether all these hashes are identical.
- If they are identical and there are at least two neighbors, then u is a valid cutting point, and its score is degree(u). Track the maximum over all such nodes.
- Output the maximum found, or -1 if no node satisfies the condition.
Why it works: the rerooting DP guarantees that for every edge (u, v), the computed hash exactly corresponds to the full structure of the component that remains connected to v after deleting u. Since tree isomorphism is fully captured by the canonical hash, equality of all neighbor-direction hashes is equivalent to pairwise isomorphism of all resulting components. This reduces the global structural comparison problem into local equality checks of precomputed canonical signatures.

The code first constructs a parent array using a DFS order. It then computes a bottom-up hash for each subtree. After that, it reroots the tree so that each directed edge has a corresponding “outside subtree” hash.
Inside the DFS, for each node u, it gathers one hash per incident edge: children contribute their subtree hashes, while the parent contributes the rerooted “up” hash. If all these values match, the node is a valid cutting point. The answer is updated with its degree.
A subtle implementation detail is that the rerooting step must exclude the child’s own contribution when passing the root down. This ensures that the “up” value represents exactly the component that remains after removing the edge.
