The key insight is to stop thinking in terms of positions and instead think in terms of value transitions. After all operations are completed, each distinct value will occupy a contiguous segment in the final sorted array. Therefore, the problem reduces to deciding how many “value segments” we must actively rearrange.
If we look at the array after compressing consecutive equal values, we get a sequence of blocks. The important observation is that an operation can fix at most one “bad boundary” between blocks of different values, and in fact the optimal strategy is tightly related to how many times the sequence changes direction relative to sorted order.
A more precise way to view it is: we want to minimize operations so that equal values become contiguous, and the order of distinct values becomes monotonic. This reduces to counting how many “value groups” we need to break apart from the natural run structure.
After compressing consecutive duplicates, we examine transitions between different values.
