A subtle edge case arises when every attack type increases the number of heads on net, even in the best possible situation. In such cases, any single attack cannot guarantee eventual progress to zero unless it can directly kill the creature from some reachable state.
For example, consider an attack with d = 5 and h = 10. If the creature has more than 5 heads, the net effect is +5 heads, which makes the situation strictly worse. A greedy approach that keeps using such attacks will diverge.
Another important edge case is when an attack can instantly kill the creature. If d ≥ current heads, the creature dies immediately regardless of h. This makes some attacks disproportionately powerful when used at the right moment.
Approaches
A brute-force strategy would try to simulate all possible sequences of attacks. From each state, we apply every attack and recursively explore outcomes, tracking the minimum number of steps needed to reach zero heads. This is conceptually correct because it explores the full decision tree of choices.
However, the number of states is effectively unbounded. Even if we cap states at x, each operation can increase or decrease the head count, so the search space expands indefinitely. In the worst case, each state branches into up to n new states, leading to exponential blowup. This is infeasible even for very small inputs.
The key observation is that most attacks are either harmful in the long run or only useful as finishing moves. If an attack has h ≥ d, then using it when the creature has more than d heads results in a net increase in heads. Such attacks cannot be part of an efficient strategy except possibly as the final killing blow.
On the other hand, attacks where h < d strictly reduce the number of heads in a “cycle”: if we apply such an attack while the creature is still alive, the net change is negative by (d − h), but capped by current size. These are the only attacks that can consistently reduce the head count over multiple steps.
This suggests a greedy structure. We want to use the best “cycle reduction” attack repeatedly to shrink the monster as much as possible, then finish with the best possible finishing attack that can kill in one hit. Since all other attacks are strictly worse in net progress, they do not contribute to an optimal solution.
We therefore compute two quantities: the best net decrease among all non-terminating attacks, and the best direct killing attack. If no attack can ever reduce the state or directly kill it, the answer is impossible.
We simulate repeatedly applying the best decreasing attack until the head count becomes small enough that a finishing blow can kill it.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We separate attacks into two categories based on whether they can finish the monster in one hit or not.
- For each attack, check if it can directly kill the monster when applied at full effect. This happens when d ≥ current heads, but since current heads changes, we instead track all attacks and consider them as potential finishing moves.
- Identify the best finishing attack, meaning an attack that could kill the monster if used at some stage. In practice, any attack can potentially be a finishing move, but we only care about its raw capability d.
- For non-finishing attacks, compute their effective reduction when applied in survival mode. Each such attack changes x to x − d + h, which is a net change of −(d − h). Only attacks with d > h are useful for reduction.
- Among all reducing attacks, select the one with maximum (d − h). This gives the fastest way to decrease heads over repeated use.
- Repeatedly apply this best reducing attack while the remaining head count is larger than any direct kill threshold.
- Once the head count is small enough, use the best finishing attack to end the fight in one move.
Why it works
The process relies on the fact that any non-terminal move either reduces the number of heads or increases it. If it increases it, it cannot be part of an optimal sequence except at the final step, because it only delays termination. Among all decreasing moves, always choosing the maximum net decrease is optimal because the system has no state-dependent benefits or future rewards, each operation is independent and linear in effect. This makes the process equivalent to minimizing a linear cost over repeated identical steps.
