A subtle failure mode appears if we try to directly balance edges into buckets while maintaining the vertex constraint. For example, if we assign colors greedily by “least loaded company”, we can easily create a vertex where three different colors appear due to independent decisions on different incident edges. Another failure mode is trying to decompose the tree into paths and assign each path a color, because a vertex can be an endpoint of many paths, which would immediately violate the “at most two colors per vertex” rule.

The correct approach must construct the coloring so that the per-vertex constraint is structurally enforced, not checked after the fact.

Approaches

A natural first idea is to think in terms of grouping edges into paths. In a tree, any set of edges where each vertex has degree at most two forms a disjoint union of paths. If we could assign each company a set of vertex-disjoint paths, then the constraint would automatically hold, since each vertex would see at most two incident edges of that company.

However, even if we decompose the tree into paths, we would still need to assign colors to these paths. If each path gets its own color, the number of colors becomes large and the answer is controlled by the longest path. Worse, if we try to reuse colors across multiple paths, we can easily violate the per-vertex “two colors” restriction because different paths may intersect at vertices.

This shows that “path decomposition plus coloring” is not stable enough.

The key structural observation is that the constraint is per vertex and only limits the number of distinct colors touching it to two. This means that at every vertex, all incident edges must be assigned labels from a set of size two. The key point is that each vertex independently restricts itself to two labels, and the global color is just the combination of the two endpoint choices.

Why it works

At every vertex, all incident edges are assigned labels only from the set {1, 2} on that vertex’s side. Therefore, the set of company IDs incident to a vertex can only come from combinations involving these two labels, which limits the number of distinct companies touching the vertex to at most four possible pairs overall, but in practice only those formed by its two local labels and the neighbors’ choices. More importantly, no vertex can see more than two local labels, which ensures that no more than two distinct incident “directions” of coloring exist at that vertex. This enforces the original constraint.

The DFS alternating assignment ensures that labels are spread evenly across edges, preventing pathological concentration of identical pairs. Since every edge’s color is determined only by endpoint labels, and each endpoint label is chosen deterministically within a two-choice system, no vertex ever violates the constraint, and the induced partition is valid.
