Algorithm Walkthrough

- Process dolls in increasing order, and for each doll $i$, consider all dolls $j > i$ such that $out_i \le in_j$. Each such transition extends a valid chain.
- When extending a chain from $i$ to $j$, we compute the new wasted space incrementally using the formula induced by nesting: each step adjusts slack by subtracting the outer volume of the previous doll from the inner volume of the next.
- For each destination $j$, we keep only transitions that achieve the minimal possible wasted space. If a transition improves the best known value, we overwrite the count. If it matches, we add counts modulo $10^9+7$.
- After processing all transitions, we restrict attention to chains that are maximal. A chain ending at $j$ is maximal if no unused doll can be inserted anywhere, which translates into a condition that all potential insertions are blocked either before or after every gap in the chain.
- Finally, we sum counts over all states that achieve the global minimum wasted space and satisfy maximality.
Why it works
The DP maintains, for every partial chain endpoint, the best achievable wasted space and the number of ways to realize it. Because transitions respect sorted order and feasibility is monotone in outer and inner volumes, every valid chain is generated exactly once through a unique sequence of extensions. The maximality constraint filters out chains that leave any valid insertion point, which corresponds to excluding states where there exists a strictly feasible intermediate doll. The combination of monotone ordering and optimal substructure guarantees correctness of the DP aggregation.
