Algorithm Walkthrough

We build the solution in two passes over the grid, using the fact that we can stream the generated values.

  5. Each time we finish processing a new row of horizontal minima, we push it into the vertical structure. Once we have processed at least a rows, the deque yields the minimum of the current a × b window for every column.
  6. Accumulate all such minima into the final answer.

The key idea is that every window minimum is produced exactly once when its bottom-right corner is processed.

Why it works

At any point in the algorithm, the horizontal pass ensures that each stored value represents the minimum over its width b segment in the original grid. The vertical pass then treats these as atomic values and computes the minimum over the last a such rows. Because the minimum operator is idempotent and associative, the minimum over a rectangle equals the minimum over first reducing rows and then reducing columns. The deques guarantee that each sliding window minimum is maintained correctly by always preserving candidates in increasing order and discarding outdated or dominated values.
