Problem Understanding

We are working with a rooted tree where every node contributes two values, a_i and b_i. For any node v, consider the path from the root down to v. Along this path we accumulate the sums of a values and b values separately. The “score” of v is the product of the absolute values of these two prefix sums.

The tree is dynamic in one direction: updates only increase a single a_v, and queries ask for the maximum score among all nodes in a given subtree.

So each node defines a function of two root-to-node prefix sums, and queries ask for a maximum over a subtree, while updates affect all descendants of a node because prefix sums propagate downward.

The constraints are large: up to 200k nodes and 100k queries. Any solution that recomputes prefix sums or subtree maxima from scratch per query will be too slow, since even a linear scan per query would lead to around 2e10 operations.

The key difficulty is that an update at node v affects every descendant’s root path sum for a, so the effect is not local. At the same time, the score is not linear, so we cannot maintain a simple aggregate like sum or max independently.

A naive approach would recompute all root-to-node sums after each update and then recompute subtree maxima. That is clearly impossible.

A second failure mode is trying to maintain prefix sums per node without considering subtree structure: updates are subtree-wide on prefix sums, so we need a structure that supports range propagation along DFS order.

Edge cases that break naive thinking include:

A tree that is a chain, where every update affects all future nodes, making naive recomputation quadratic.

Another is alternating signs in a and b, where absolute values hide cancellation effects, so local reasoning about maxima fails.

Approaches

The core observation is that both prefix sums depend only on the root-to-node path, so if we define arrays:

A[v] = sum of a on root→v

B[v] = sum of b on root→v

then the answer for a node is |A[v]| * |B[v]|.

Updates only change A[v] and all descendants of v equally, since every descendant’s path includes v.

So the problem reduces to maintaining a tree where we support:

  1. Add value x to all A[u] for nodes u in subtree of v.
  2. For a subtree, compute maximum of |A[u]| * |B[u]|.

This is a classic pattern where we convert subtree queries into range queries using an Euler tour. Each subtree becomes a segment in an array.

Now everything becomes a 1D problem:

We maintain an array over Euler order where each position i stores (A[i], B[i]).

Updates become range add on A.

Queries become maximum over a segment of a function f(A[i], B[i]).

The hard part is that f(x, y) = |x| * |y| is not linear or convex in a way that segment trees can directly optimize.

The key insight is to maintain a segment tree that stores enough convex hull-like structure over A and B splits by sign. Since B is static, only A changes via range add, and we need to maintain candidates that maximize the product.

We treat each segment node as maintaining a set of linear functions in terms of A split by sign of B. For fixed B, maximizing |A| * |B| reduces to maximizing |A| weighted by constant |B|, but A shifts uniformly under updates.

So each segment tree node tracks extreme candidates of A: maximum and minimum A values in that segment. Since |A| depends on distance from zero, only extremal values matter. Combined with B, we maintain four candidates: max/min of A and associated B extremes.

This reduces each segment to tracking best combinations of boundary values, because the function is maximized at extremes under uniform shifts.

Lazy propagation is used to maintain range additions on A.

Algorithm Walkthrough

1. Root the tree and compute Euler tour

We assign each node a position in a DFS order so that every subtree becomes a contiguous segment. This transforms subtree queries into interval queries.

2. Compute initial prefix sums

We perform a DFS from the root, maintaining running sums of a and b. These give initial A[v] and B[v] for every node.

3. Build an array over Euler order

We store (A[v], B[v]) in the Euler array. Now every subtree query becomes a segment [tin[v], tout[v]].

4. Build a segment tree

Each segment tree node stores:

For query 2 v, we query the segment tree on [tin[v], tout[v]] and compute:

Why it works

Inside any segment, after applying a uniform shift to all A values, the absolute value function is piecewise linear, and maxima of |A| * |B| over a set occur at boundary points of A. Since B is fixed per node and does not change, interior values of A cannot dominate both extremes simultaneously. Thus maintaining only min/max A per segment is sufficient to reconstruct the maximum possible product after lazy updates.
