The key observation is that each query modifies only one edge. This suggests that we should understand how shortest paths react to a single edge weight change, instead of recomputing everything.
We start by computing the shortest distances from node 1 to all nodes using the original graph, and also from node n to all nodes using the original graph reversed. Let these arrays be dist1 and distn.
Now consider a query that changes edge e = (u, v) from weight w to x. Any shortest path under this modification is of two types. Either it does not use this edge at all, in which case its cost is unchanged and equal to the original shortest path distance dist1[n]. Or it uses this edge at least once. Because all weights are positive, an optimal path will use the modified edge at most once, so we only need to consider paths that go from 1 to u, traverse the edge, and then go from v to n, or the reverse direction.
This reduces each query to checking a constant number of candidate values derived from dist1 and distn.
The remaining subtlety is that the shortest path might also use the modified edge in the opposite direction, so both orientations must be tested.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We transform the problem into answering each query using precomputed shortest path information.
- Run Dijkstra from node 1 on the original graph and store dist1[v], the shortest distance from 1 to every node v. This gives a baseline for all forward travel costs.

The reason we can restrict to these candidates is that any path using the modified edge can be decomposed into a prefix from 1 to one endpoint, the edge itself, and a suffix from the other endpoint to n. If a path used the edge multiple times, removing the cycle would strictly reduce cost since all weights are positive, so it cannot be optimal.
Why it works
The preprocessing computes globally optimal distances from both ends. For any candidate path that uses the modified edge, everything except that edge can be replaced by shortest paths without increasing cost. This is valid because shortest paths satisfy optimal substructure: any subpath of a shortest path is itself shortest. Therefore, the only degree of freedom introduced by the query is whether the modified edge is used, and in which direction. All other structure is already optimally compressed into dist1 and distn.
