The value f(x) is not about a single walk. It is about the set of all positions that are reachable from 0 if we are never allowed to step outside [0, x] at any point in the exploration. Once we know this reachable set for a fixed boundary x, we count how many distinct integers it contains. Finally, we need the sum of these values for all x from 0 to m.
The key difficulty is that f(x) changes as soon as the boundary becomes large enough to enable previously impossible intermediate states. So the structure of reachable states evolves as x grows.
The constraints are extremely asymmetric: m can be up to 10^9, while a and b are up to 10^5. This immediately rules out any approach that recomputes reachability separately for every x. Even a linear scan over x is impossible, since 10^9 operations is too large for 2 seconds.
A deeper constraint comes from the nature of the state space. Every reachable position is an integer combination of a and b, but the restriction to [0, x] turns this into a bounded graph exploration problem whose structure stabilizes after some point.
The main edge cases come from extreme parameter relationships. If a = b, movement degenerates into either staying or jumping symmetrically, and reachability collapses into a simple arithmetic progression behavior. If a is much larger than x, the frog can never advance, making f(x) = 1 for small x. If b is large compared to a, backward jumps are rare or impossible within bounds, changing connectivity sharply.
A particularly subtle failure case appears when a and b share a gcd greater than 1. In that case, reachable positions are restricted to a residue class modulo gcd(a, b), and any naive BFS that assumes full integer coverage will overcount states.
Approaches
The brute-force interpretation is straightforward. For each x, we build a graph whose nodes are integers in [0, x]. From each node k, we add edges to k + a and k - b if those remain inside the interval. We then run a BFS or DFS from 0 and count visited nodes. This correctly computes f(x).
However, this approach repeats essentially the same traversal for every x. In the worst case, each BFS is O(x), and summing over all x up to m gives O(m^2), which is far beyond feasible limits when m = 10^9.
The key observation is that we do not actually need to recompute reachability from scratch for each boundary. The structure of reachable states depends on two phases. Initially, the reachable set grows irregularly while both forward and backward jumps interact with the boundary. After a threshold, the system becomes periodic: reachable states in a large enough interval behave like a modular arithmetic progression governed by g = gcd(a, b).
Once x is large enough, every reachable value is characterized only by its residue modulo g, and the set of reachable residues stabilizes. This turns the problem into tracking how many residues become active and how far they propagate, allowing us to compute f(x) as a piecewise linear function of x after preprocessing the small region up to a threshold of about a + b.
We split the computation into two parts: a direct simulation for small x up to the stabilization boundary, and a closed-form summation for all larger x where f(x) grows linearly with slope determined by reachable residues.

Edge Cases
