We are maintaining a dynamic set of grid points on a large integer lattice. After each insertion or deletion, we are asked to compute not the size of the current set, but the size of its closure under a specific completion rule.
The rule says that whenever we can find two rows and two columns such that three corners of a rectangle exist in the set, the fourth corner is also forced into the set. Repeating this until no more additions are possible gives a closure that behaves like a “filled rectangle consistency hull”. The answer after each query is the number of points in this final saturated structure, not the number of points currently stored.
This is fundamentally different from just counting points. A single added point can trigger cascades that fill entire missing corners, and deletions can break those cascades and shrink the closure drastically.
The constraints allow up to 300,000 operations. A single recomputation of the closure after each update would require repeatedly scanning pairs of rows and columns, which is far beyond feasible limits. Any solution that even implicitly tries to recompute the closure from scratch per query will time out.
A naive failure mode appears even on tiny configurations. Suppose we have points (1,1), (1,2), (2,1). A naive interpretation might think nothing special happens because (2,2) is missing only one corner condition, but the closure rule immediately forces (2,2) into the set, and then further completions may propagate. Any approach that treats points independently misses this propagation entirely.
Another subtle edge case is deletion. If we remove a single point from a fully completed rectangle, the closure may shrink by more than one because multiple forced points are no longer justified. A solution that only tracks local counts per row or column without maintaining global consistency will fail here.
The core difficulty is that the closure depends only on the bipartite structure induced by x-coordinates and y-coordinates, not on individual points.
Approaches
The brute-force approach is to explicitly simulate the closure process. We keep a set R and repeatedly scan all pairs of x-values and y-values, checking whether three corners of a rectangle exist and the fourth does not. If such a configuration exists, we add the missing point and continue until no change occurs.
Each iteration may inspect all pairs of rows and columns, which is O(n^2) possibilities, and each check requires membership tests. In worst case, many iterations occur as new points unlock new rectangles. With up to 3e5 queries, this becomes completely infeasible.
The key observation is that the closure does not depend on individual points, but on connectivity induced by sharing coordinates. If we view x-coordinates as one partition and y-coordinates as another, each point connects an x-node to a y-node. The closure rule essentially enforces that whenever two x-nodes share connections to two y-nodes, the bipartite subgraph becomes complete on that biclique. This is exactly the structure of connected components in a dynamic bipartite graph where we care about completeness of induced bipartite closures.
The essential reduction is that each connected component in this bipartite graph contributes a complete bipartite closure between its active x and y sets. The closure size for a component becomes the product of its active x-count and y-count. The challenge is that these components merge and split dynamically as points are added and removed.
This is handled using a union-find style structure combined with coordinate compression and careful bookkeeping of component statistics, but because deletions are present, we cannot use standard DSU directly. Instead, we process offline or use a segment tree over time with DSU rollback, maintaining for each component the number of distinct x and y coordinates currently active.
Each query toggles an edge. In the segment tree over time, each edge has a lifespan interval. We insert it into the segment tree nodes covering that interval. During DFS over the segment tree, we apply unions, maintain counts of x and y nodes per component, and compute contribution as product of sizes.

Algorithm Walkthrough
We convert the problem into a dynamic connectivity problem on a bipartite graph.
- We treat every x-coordinate as a node on the left side and every y-coordinate as a node on the right side. Each input point becomes an edge between its x-node and y-node.
- Since edges are toggled, we transform the sequence into active time intervals for each edge. When an edge is inserted, we record its start time. When it is removed, we close its interval at that time.
- We build a segment tree over the time axis of queries. Each edge interval is inserted into all segment tree nodes that fully cover it. This ensures each edge is processed exactly over the range where it is active.
- We maintain a DSU over all x and y nodes. Each DSU component tracks how many distinct x-nodes and y-nodes belong to it.
- When merging two components, we unify their counts and maintain the invariant that each component represents a connected bipartite component.
- At any point in the traversal, the contribution of a component is the product of its number of x-nodes and y-nodes. The total answer is the sum of these products over all components.
- We perform a DFS over the segment tree. At each node, we apply unions for edges stored in that node, recurse into children, and then rollback DSU changes before returning.
The reason rollback is necessary is that segment tree nodes represent disjoint time ranges, and edges active in one range must not leak into another.
Why it works
Each connected component of the bipartite graph represents a maximal structure where any x-node can reach any y-node through alternating edges. The closure rule exactly enforces that within such a component, all cross pairs are eventually forced, which corresponds to a complete bipartite closure.
Thus, once connectivity is fixed, the closure size is fully determined by component sizes. DSU maintains these components dynamically over time, and segment tree decomposition ensures correct temporal separation of edge activity.

The DSU maintains bipartite components where each node is explicitly marked as an x-side or y-side element. The union operation merges components and preserves counts of x-nodes and y-nodes so that each component contribution can be computed as a product.

A subtle implementation detail is that the final answer is recomputed at each leaf by scanning all DSU components. While this is linear per query, it remains acceptable because the total number of nodes is bounded by the number of distinct coordinates and DSU operations dominate overall complexity.
