Starting from some position inside the segment, we repeatedly jump to the next occurrence on the right that has a strictly larger value than the current one. Importantly, the jump is not arbitrary. From index p, the next index is defined uniquely as the smallest position to the right where the value increases. This makes the subsequence deterministic once the starting position is fixed.

For each window, we want to know how long such a greedy process can become if we choose the starting index optimally inside that window.

The constraints are extreme: the array length can reach one million, and the window slides across almost the entire array. Any solution that processes each window independently with even logarithmic overhead will be too slow. This immediately rules out recomputing greedy chains from scratch for every position.

A subtle issue appears when values repeat or when local increases are sparse. A naive intuition might suggest that this is just a longest increasing subsequence problem inside each window, but the “greedy next greater element” rule makes it structurally different. The choice of next element is forced, so we are not optimizing subsequence selection, only the starting point.

A common failure case for naive reasoning is when a local maximum is close to a much larger value far to the right.

For example, in a window like [3, 1, 2, 100, 4], starting at 3 immediately jumps to 100, giving a short chain, while starting at 1 yields a longer chain 1 → 2 → 100. A naive approach that tries to always start from the maximum value in the window would miss such cases.

The real challenge is that we must evaluate many starting points efficiently while sliding the window.

Approaches

A brute-force solution would, for each window, simulate the greedy process from every index inside the window. From each starting position, we repeatedly scan right to find the next strictly greater element. Each scan is linear in the worst case, so a single simulation is O(k), and doing it for all starts makes it O(k²) per window. With up to O(n) windows, this becomes completely infeasible at roughly O(n³) in the worst case.

The key observation is that the greedy process depends only on the “next greater element” structure of the array. Once we know, for every index, where it jumps next, the sequence length from any starting point becomes a simple chain length in a directed graph where each node has at most one outgoing edge.

So the problem reduces to two parts. First, compute the next greater element index for every position. Second, for each window, determine the longest chain starting from any index whose entire chain stays inside that window.

The first part is a classic monotonic stack computation in O(n). The second part is trickier because the chain may exit the window, and we must ensure that we only count jumps that remain inside the current segment. This is handled by preprocessing jump pointers and using a binary lifting table or equivalent jump compression so that we can “skip” segments of the chain that stay inside a window efficiently. The final structure allows each window to be processed in near O(1) or O(log n), depending on implementation, after linear preprocessing.

  1. Compute for every index i the next position nxt[i] to the right such that a[nxt[i]] > a[i]. This is done using a monotonic decreasing stack. The stack ensures we always resolve next greater elements in linear time.

  5. Track the maximum chain length over all starts in the window.

The key optimization is that instead of walking step by step along the greedy chain, we use precomputed exponential jumps to skip large portions while staying inside bounds.

Why it works

Each index deterministically defines a unique greedy chain because the next element is uniquely defined. This makes the structure a collection of disjoint forward paths. Binary lifting preserves reachability along these paths while compressing repeated transitions. Since every jump strictly increases values, cycles cannot exist, and each chain is finite. The correctness follows from the fact that any greedy subsequence is exactly a prefix of repeated application of the nxt function.

The function get_len(i, r) computes how many greedy jumps can be taken from index i without leaving the right boundary r. It greedily applies the largest valid jump first, which works because the chain is strictly increasing and acyclic.

Finally, each window is scanned and all starting positions are tested using the jump function.
