Some nodes are leaves, meaning they have exactly one adjacent edge. For each query, we are given a vertex v and an interval of indices [l, r] in this DFS order. Among all leaf vertices whose DFS order index lies in that interval, we must find the minimum weighted distance from v to any of them.

The difficulty is not computing distances in a tree, but repeatedly answering range-constrained nearest-leaf queries over a very large set of nodes.

The constraints push us into a regime where any solution must be close to linear or near-linear preprocessing with logarithmic or better query time. With up to 500,000 nodes and 500,000 queries, anything quadratic over nodes or queries is immediately infeasible. Even a per-query DFS or BFS is impossible because each would cost O(n) in the worst case.

A naive idea is to precompute distances from every node to every leaf, but that is O(n^2) in both time and memory, which is completely out of scope.

A more subtle failure case comes from trying to restrict attention only to leaves without respecting the DFS index interval. For example, if the closest leaf in the tree is outside [l, r], the answer must ignore it even if it is structurally adjacent to v. A greedy nearest-leaf computation per node would silently produce wrong answers here.

Another pitfall is assuming DFS order corresponds to subtree intervals. In general Euler tours do give subtree ranges, but here the order is constrained by adjacency sorting, and we only use it as a global label system. We cannot treat [l, r] as a subtree query.

Approaches

The brute-force solution is straightforward. For each query, we iterate over all vertices whose DFS index lies in [l, r], filter those that are leaves, compute tree distance from v to each of them using a shortest-path method such as BFS or precomputed LCA distances, and take the minimum. This is correct because it directly evaluates the definition. However, even if distance queries are optimized to O(log n), scanning a range of size O(n) per query makes the total complexity O(nq), which is far beyond limits.

The key observation is that we are repeatedly asking range minimum queries, but the value being minimized depends on a fixed node v per query. This suggests reversing perspective: instead of scanning leaves per query, we want a structure that can answer “minimum over leaves in a range with respect to a dynamic cost function”.

This becomes a classic offline divide-and-conquer on the segment tree over DFS order, combined with a centroid decomposition over the tree to support fast distance queries.

We precompute all leaves and place them into a segment tree by DFS index. For each segment tree node, we store a centroid-decomposed structure that allows us to query the minimum distance from any node v to any leaf in that segment. The centroid decomposition provides, for every node, its distances to all ancestors in the centroid tree. Using this, each query can be evaluated in O(log n) centroid steps per segment tree node, giving O(log^2 n) per query.

To make this efficient, we build for each centroid node a sorted structure of distances to leaves in its subtree, enabling fast merging and range aggregation. The segment tree ensures we only visit O(log n) nodes per query range.

The combination works because one structure (segment tree) handles index constraints, and the other (centroid decomposition) handles distance queries efficiently.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We combine two layers of decomposition: one over the DFS index array and one over the tree geometry.

This is required because the query constraints are expressed in this ordering, and it becomes our primary 1D index space. 2. Identify all leaf nodes and store their DFS indices.

Only these nodes can ever contribute to answers, so we ignore all internal nodes in the query structure. 3. Build a segment tree over the DFS index range [1, n].

Each segment tree node represents a contiguous block of DFS indices. 4. At each segment tree node, maintain a centroid decomposition structure over the subtree induced by leaves in that segment.

The purpose is to support fast queries of the form: minimum distance from a fixed node v to any leaf stored in this segment. 5. Precompute centroid decomposition for the original tree.
