Problem Understanding
We are given a tree where each node carries an integer label. For any two vertices, consider the unique simple path between them. Along that path we look at all vertex values and compute their greatest common divisor. We are interested only in pairs of vertices whose path gcd is greater than 1, meaning the values along that entire path share some prime factor.
Among all such valid pairs, we want the maximum number of vertices contained in the path, so essentially the longest path in edges plus one where every vertex value shares at least one common divisor greater than 1.
The structure matters because values are not independent. A single vertex with value 1 breaks any gcd condition through it. More generally, the condition “gcd of path > 1” is equivalent to “there exists a prime p such that every node on the path is divisible by p”.
The constraints push us away from any method that recomputes gcd for each pair. With up to 2 × 10^5 nodes, even O(n^2) pairs or O(n) work per pair is far too slow. Any acceptable solution must effectively process each node a small number of times, usually O(log n) or O(α(n)) or amortized linear over all edges.
A naive approach might try to run DFS from every node, maintaining gcd along the path. This fails because each DFS explores O(n) nodes, producing O(n^2) total work.
A more subtle failure case appears when values are highly composite, for example all nodes are 2. A naive pruning strategy that stops when gcd becomes 1 would never trigger, and would still traverse entire subtrees repeatedly, again leading to quadratic behavior.
The key difficulty is that gcd is not monotonic in a simple way across branching paths, but prime divisibility is. That shift from gcd to prime factors is what unlocks the solution.
Approaches
A direct brute force approach would enumerate all pairs of vertices, compute the path between them using LCA or DFS parent pointers, and evaluate gcd along that path. Each path evaluation costs O(length of path), which is O(n) in the worst case, leading to O(n^3) total in a chain-shaped tree. Even with preprocessing, the number of pairs alone is O(n^2), which is already too large.
We can improve by noticing that the condition gcd(path) > 1 is equivalent to the existence of at least one prime that divides every node on the path. Instead of tracking gcd values, we track prime divisibility.
For each prime p, consider the subgraph induced by nodes whose values are divisible by p. The problem reduces to finding the longest path inside this induced subgraph that respects tree connectivity. However, this induced subgraph is not necessarily connected in the original tree sense, so we cannot just compute a diameter directly on the full tree.
The key observation is that for a fixed prime p, we only care about edges connecting nodes divisible by p. If we ignore all other nodes, the remaining structure becomes a forest. The answer for this prime is simply the maximum diameter across all connected components of this filtered tree.
So the global answer is the maximum over all primes of these component diameters.
We can build a mapping from prime to nodes divisible by it, then for each prime, activate those nodes and run a DFS restricted to them to compute component diameters. To avoid recomputation, we process primes in a sieve-like factorization step, ensuring each node contributes to a small number of primes.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Precompute the smallest prime factor for every number up to max(a_i). This allows fast factorization of each node value. This is necessary because we must efficiently extract prime divisors for each node.
- For every node, factorize its value into distinct primes. For each prime p, append the node to a list buckets[p]. This groups nodes by divisibility.
- For each prime p that appears in any node, we now consider only nodes divisible by p. We mark these nodes as active.
- We build a traversal over the original tree but only follow edges where both endpoints are active for prime p. This effectively creates the induced subgraph.
- For each connected component in this induced subgraph, we compute its diameter using two DFS passes. First DFS finds a farthest node, second DFS from that node gives the diameter.
- Track the maximum diameter across all primes. The final answer is this maximum.
- If no prime appears in any valid component of size at least 2, the answer is 0.
Why this works is rooted in the equivalence between gcd greater than 1 and shared prime divisibility. Every valid path must lie entirely inside the node set divisible by some prime p, so it must appear in one of these induced components. The diameter computation ensures we capture the longest possible such path per prime, and taking the maximum over primes covers all possibilities without overlap or omission.

The solution builds adjacency lists for the tree and factors each node using a smallest prime factor sieve. Each node is assigned to multiple prime buckets, ensuring we only process relevant nodes per prime.
For each prime, we construct an induced subgraph implicitly using the allowed array. We then find connected components inside this induced structure using DFS. Each component’s diameter is computed with two DFS passes: one to find an extreme endpoint and another to measure the longest distance from it. We convert edge distance to vertex count by adding one.
Care must be taken to avoid revisiting nodes across components for the same prime. The seen array ensures each component is processed exactly once per prime.

Edge Cases

In that situation every induced subgraph per prime has only isolated vertices, and the correct answer is 1 if any node exists, but since the problem asks for pairs, the safest interpretation is that single vertices contribute distance 1 but overall maximum is still 1 only if at least one node has a non-trivial prime condition across itself. The algorithm handles this because each node still forms a component of size 1, producing diameter 1.
Another edge case is a star-shaped tree where only leaves share a common prime. The induced subgraph splits into multiple small components, and the DFS per component correctly avoids mixing branches through the center node if it is not divisible by the same prime.
Finally, when a node has many repeated prime factors, factorization must deduplicate primes. Without using a set per node, the same node could be processed multiple times per prime and artificially inflate adjacency processing cost. The implementation explicitly removes duplicates during factorization, ensuring correctness and efficiency.
