Problem Understanding

Two players interact with this structure. Mitya moves the chip downward by choosing a child each turn, while Vasya can block progress by deleting one outgoing edge from the current chip position or skip. Mitya may stop at any moment. Once he stops, the game ends and the chip must return from its current node back to the root. While going down and then coming back up, Mitya may eat any number of cookies at visited nodes, paying a per-cookie cost. The total cost of all movements and eating must not exceed a fixed budget T. The goal is to maximize how many cookies Mitya can eat, assuming Vasya plays optimally to hinder him.

The key difficulty is that Vasya can progressively delete edges, meaning Mitya cannot assume the full subtree remains available. The path Mitya ultimately uses depends on this adversarial process, so we are effectively looking for a strategy that guarantees a best possible root-to-node-to-root route under worst-case pruning.

The constraints force us into roughly O(n log n) or O(n) style reasoning. With up to 100000 nodes and very large T up to 10^18, we cannot simulate gameplay or try paths explicitly. Any solution that tries to consider all paths or simulate interaction step by step will explode combinatorially because each node choice branches and Vasya’s deletions add further branching.

A subtle failure case appears if we ignore Vasya entirely and just pick a best root-to-leaf path by greedy or DP on a tree. That ignores that Vasya can force Mitya away from a locally optimal branch by deleting edges. Another failure case appears if we optimize only for distance cost without considering eating efficiency t_i, since eating is coupled with traversal: a node with many cookies might still be bad if eating is expensive relative to time budget.

Approaches

A direct brute-force interpretation is to simulate the game tree. At each step, Mitya chooses a child, Vasya may remove one edge, and we explore all possible resulting subtrees until Mitya stops at every possible node. At stopping time we evaluate the best allocation of time on the upward path. This quickly becomes exponential: each move branches over children and Vasya’s deletions create a combinatorial explosion of possible remaining trees. Even on a chain this is manageable, but on a branching tree it becomes impossible beyond n around 20.

The key observation is that Vasya’s deletions can be interpreted as controlling which subtree Mitya is allowed to continue exploring, but in an optimal play equilibrium, only the best available continuation matters at each node. Instead of tracking explicit game states, we reinterpret the process as computing for each node the best guaranteed outcome if Mitya reaches it and then proceeds optimally downward, while accounting for the fact that any sibling subtree might be blocked.

This leads to a tree DP where we evaluate each node by combining contributions from children in a way that reflects that only one child path can be followed, and that path should be the best achievable under constraints. The second transformation is to move from “number of cookies” to “time budget feasibility”: for a fixed candidate answer k (cookies eaten), we can ask whether there exists a root-to-root tour that can collect k cookies within time T under optimal play constraints. This converts the problem into a monotone feasibility check.

We then binary search the answer. For each node, we compute the minimal time required to collect k cookies in its subtree along any valid path, taking into account both descent cost and ascent cost plus eating cost. The DP merges children by selecting the best feasible continuation since only one branch can be followed in a single traversal.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We reformulate the problem as checking whether a given number k of cookies can be collected within time T.

  1. We fix a value k and try to determine if Mitya can guarantee collecting at least k cookies starting from the root and returning to it. This converts optimization into feasibility checking.
  2. We define a DP state at each node that represents the minimum time needed to collect up to k cookies in its subtree while respecting that only one child branch can be fully exploited due to adversarial blocking. The DP accounts for both downward movement and upward return.
  3. We perform a postorder traversal of the tree so that children are processed before parents. This ensures that when processing a node, we already know the best achievable results from all descendants.
  4. For each node, we consider two components: collecting cookies at the node itself and possibly extending into one chosen child subtree. Since only one continuation path is viable under adversarial edge deletions, we take the best among children rather than summing them.
  5. We incorporate movement costs l_i when transitioning between parent and child, and we ensure that returning to the root includes the accumulated upward edge costs along the chosen path.
  6. We also account for eating cost t_i per cookie by treating cookie collection as consuming time proportional to how many cookies we choose at each node, up to the remaining budget required to reach k.
  7. After computing DP feasibility for a given k, we check whether total time stays within T. If feasible, we try larger k, otherwise smaller k, using binary search.
  8. The final answer is the largest k that passes feasibility.

Why it works

The adversarial deletion model collapses all branching choices into a single enforced path, because Mitya can only benefit from one surviving child chain per segment of play. Any attempt to distribute collection across multiple subtrees can be disrupted by Vasya removing alternative continuations, so optimal play always concentrates on a single best path from any node downward. The DP captures this by always selecting the best child continuation rather than aggregating multiple subtrees. The monotonicity in k ensures binary search correctness: if k cookies are achievable, any smaller number is also achievable under the same strategy structure.
