Why it works

Because each step greedily maximizes y under feasibility constraints, no later assignment can force a contradiction on the right side, and the derived x is automatically the minimal value compatible with both the sum and left monotonicity. This prevents future sums from requiring a left value smaller than what has already been fixed, which is the only way the construction could fail.
