Since a tree on n vertices has exactly n - 1 edges, and the input already contains m edges, we must add n - 1 - m edges, which is exactly one less than the number of connected components.

After adding these edges, we are free to choose how to connect the components, but the resulting structure must remain a tree. Among all possible ways to connect the components, we want the one that minimizes the diameter of the final tree, where diameter is the maximum shortest-path distance between any pair of vertices.

The input graph structure matters only through its connected components and the internal structure of each component, because we are allowed to connect components arbitrarily.

The constraint n ≤ 1000 implies that even quadratic or near-quadratic preprocessing per component is acceptable. We can afford running BFS or DFS from multiple nodes, even twice per component, since the total work across all components stays bounded by about O(n^2) in the worst case.

A naive but incorrect intuition would be to connect components arbitrarily or in a chain. This fails because the diameter becomes sensitive to ordering.

For example, suppose we have three components:

Component A is a long path of length 10, component B is a single edge, and component C is another single edge. If we connect them in a chain A-B-C, the diameter goes through both attachments and becomes unnecessarily large. A better strategy would place the largest “center” in a way that limits cross-component distances.

Another subtle failure case is choosing endpoints of trees instead of centers. If we attach leaves instead of central nodes, distances inside a component inflate the final diameter even if the global structure is optimal.

The core difficulty is that each component behaves like a “ball” with a radius, and we are deciding how to glue these balls together.

Approaches

A brute-force solution would try every way of connecting components into a tree and compute the resulting diameter each time. If there are k components, there are k^(k-2) possible labeled trees by Cayley’s formula, and even restricting to choosing edges between components still leaves exponential configurations. For each configuration, computing diameter costs O(n) or O(n^2) depending on method, making this completely infeasible even for small n.

The key observation is that each component can be summarized by two values: its diameter and its center. The diameter tells us the worst internal distance, and the center minimizes maximum distance to all nodes inside the component. When we connect components, any path that crosses components must go through the chosen connection points, so the only useful representation of a component is how far its farthest node is from its chosen attachment point.

If we pick a center for each component and connect all centers in a star, all cross-component paths go through a single hub. Then any path between two components is controlled by the sum of their radii plus one edge between them. This reduces the entire problem to choosing the best hub component.

The optimal hub is the component with the largest radius. This ensures that the worst cross-component path is minimized, because every other component attaches to the largest one.

Algorithm Walkthrough

  1. Split the graph into connected components using DFS or BFS. Each component is processed independently because there are no edges between them initially.
  2. For each component, pick an arbitrary node and run BFS to find the farthest node a. This node is one endpoint of a diameter candidate.
  3. Run BFS again from a to find the farthest node b. The distance between a and b is the diameter of this component. This works because the farthest node from an arbitrary start is always an endpoint of some diameter in a tree.
  4. Run BFS from a again and from b again to compute distances to all nodes. For each node, compute max(dist_a[x], dist_b[x]). The node minimizing this value is the center of the component. This node minimizes the maximum distance to all others.
  5. Store for each component its diameter and its center.
  6. Identify the component with the largest radius (half of diameter rounded up in effect, but we use computed max distance directly). This component becomes the hub.
  7. For every other component, connect its center to the hub center using an added edge. These edges are sufficient to connect all components into a single tree.
  8. Compute the final diameter as the maximum of two values: the largest original component diameter and the maximum over all pairs of components of radius[i] + 1 + radius[j], which is maximized by pairing the largest and second largest radii.

Why it works

Each component behaves like a tree rooted at its center, and any path entering or leaving a component must pass through that center in the construction. This reduces each component to a weighted node with weight equal to its radius. The diameter of any path that crosses components is therefore determined by two radii plus one connecting edge. Choosing the largest radius as the hub minimizes the worst possible sum of two radii across different components, because all other components attach through a single point instead of chaining and accumulating multiple radii.

A single-component input already forms a tree, so no edges are added and the answer is just its diameter. The algorithm naturally handles this because it never enters the component-connection stage when only one component exists.
