Problem Understanding
We have several rectangles on the plane. Each rectangle represents a photo hanging on a wall. The rectangles may overlap, may share edges, may coincide completely, and may also be rotated arbitrarily.
A dart is thrown uniformly at random over the entire wall, but we only care about throws that hit at least one rectangle. The score of a throw equals the number of rectangles containing the hit point. We must compute the expected score under this condition.
If we denote by $k(p)$ the number of rectangles covering point $p$, then the expected score is

The numerator counts total covered area with multiplicity, while the denominator counts the union area of all rectangles.
The input size is the real difficulty here. There can be up to 500 rectangles, and coordinates can be large. A geometric algorithm with pairwise processing is fine, but anything that tries to explicitly build all overlap regions will explode combinatorially. Even an $O(n^3)$ geometric subdivision becomes dangerous because intersections between arbitrary rotated rectangles create many regions.
The key observation is that rectangles are convex polygons with only four edges. This strongly limits the complexity of clipping operations. Any algorithm based on repeated convex polygon intersection remains manageable.
There are several edge cases that silently break naive implementations.
The first one is complete overlap.

The correct expectation is 2. Every valid dart hits both rectangles. A naive algorithm that only computes union area without multiplicity would incorrectly return 1.
The second one is touching rectangles.

The rectangles share only a boundary edge. Since edges have zero area, the union area is 2 and the total multiplicity area is also 2, so the expectation equals 1. Algorithms that treat boundary intersections carelessly may accidentally count extra overlap area.
The third one is partial overlap with rotation.

The second rectangle is rotated by 45 degrees. Axis-aligned tricks fail immediately here. Any correct solution must work for arbitrary convex quadrilaterals.
Approaches
The brute-force perspective is straightforward. Partition the plane into regions where the set of covering rectangles is constant, compute the area of each region, multiply by the number of active rectangles, and divide by total covered area.
This is correct because the score is constant inside each region.
The problem is that the arrangement complexity becomes enormous. Every pair of rectangle edges may intersect, creating many polygonal fragments. Explicitly constructing the entire planar subdivision is far too complicated and too slow.
A better way starts from rewriting the expectation formula.
Let $A_i$ be the area of rectangle $i$. Then
$$\int k(p),dp = \sum_i A_i$$
because each rectangle contributes 1 over its own area.
So the numerator is trivial.
The entire problem reduces to computing the union area of all rectangles.
Now we need an efficient union-area algorithm for arbitrary convex polygons.
The standard trick is inclusion by visibility. For each rectangle, compute the portion of its area not covered by any previous rectangle. Summing these visible contributions gives the union area.
For one rectangle, we examine each edge and collect all parameter intervals along that edge where another rectangle blocks visibility. After merging intervals, we reconstruct the visible boundary fragments and integrate them using cross products.
This works because the boundary of the uncovered region is formed by portions of rectangle edges. Since every rectangle is convex and has only four sides, interval clipping stays small and efficient.
The brute-force works because geometric regions completely determine the score, but fails because the number of regions can grow quadratically or worse. The visibility observation avoids constructing regions explicitly. We only track which portions of edges survive in the final union boundary.

Algorithm Walkthrough
- Read all rectangles as polygons with four vertices in cyclic order.
- Compute the numerator directly by summing rectangle areas.
Each rectangle area is computed with the shoelace formula. 3. Compute the union area incrementally.
Process rectangles one by one. For rectangle $i$, determine how much of it is not covered by rectangles $0 \ldots i-1$. 4. For every edge of rectangle $i$, parameterize the edge as

After sorting intervals, combine overlapping pieces into maximal blocked segments. 4. The complementary intervals correspond to visible edge fragments.

Why it works
The numerator identity follows directly from linearity of integration. Every point covered by $k$ rectangles contributes exactly $k$ to the integral, which is equivalent to summing areas independently.
For the denominator, every point of the union boundary belongs to exactly one visible rectangle edge fragment, namely the outermost one during incremental insertion. Hidden edge parts are discarded by interval clipping. The surviving fragments form the exact boundary of the accumulated union polygonal region. Applying Green's theorem or the shoelace formula on these oriented fragments yields the precise union area.
Since convex clipping on a segment always produces one interval, the algorithm never misses disconnected pieces or double-counts boundary arcs.

The first important detail is orientation normalization. The half-plane clipping logic assumes every rectangle is counterclockwise. If a rectangle comes clockwise, all inequalities flip and interval clipping becomes incorrect. Reversing the vertex order fixes this.
The function inside_interval_on_rect is the core geometric primitive. It computes which parameter values along a segment lie inside a convex rectangle. Each rectangle edge contributes one linear inequality in $t$, and intersecting all inequalities produces the valid interval.
The union area computation works edge by edge. For one edge, we gather all blocked parameter intervals caused by previous rectangles, merge them, and keep the uncovered gaps. Each uncovered segment contributes directly to the shoelace sum through cross products.
A subtle implementation choice is the EPS handling. Geometry near boundaries is numerically unstable. Without small tolerances, two intervals that should merge might remain separated by tiny floating-point noise, producing duplicated boundary fragments and incorrect area.
Another easy mistake is counting fully hidden edges. The code avoids this naturally because after merging intervals, there may be no uncovered gap left.
