Movement is done using chess pieces, but with an extra twist. At any moment we are standing on a cell with some piece chosen among a knight, bishop, or rook. In one operation we either move that piece according to its rules or replace it with another piece without moving. The cost is the total number of operations. Among all ways to minimize operations, we also minimize the number of replacements, but only after the shortest-path distance is fixed.
So the real structure is not about the grid itself but about transitions between numbered cells. Each number defines a node in a sequence, and between consecutive numbers we need to compute the cheapest way to travel from one fixed square to the next, while being allowed to switch movement rules.
Because $N \le 10$, the grid has at most 100 cells, and therefore at most 100 nodes in this forced path. This immediately suggests that we can afford a fairly heavy state graph over positions and piece types, since $100 \times 3 = 300$ states is tiny.
A naive mistake would be to assume we only need shortest path on the grid for each piece separately and then pick the best piece for each segment independently. This fails because the best piece to end a segment depends on which piece you want to start the next segment with, and replacements carry cost. The brute-force interpretation is to treat each segment between consecutive numbers as a separate problem: compute shortest path from cell $i$ to cell $i+1$ for each piece, then try to stitch results. But this ignores that we are allowed to change pieces mid-route, and more importantly that we must track which piece we end with. The number of possible state sequences grows exponentially if we try to enumerate all paths and all piece-change patterns.
The key observation is that this is a shortest path problem on an expanded graph. Each state is defined by a triple: current cell, current target cell index, and current piece type. However, we do not need to explicitly store the target index in the state graph; instead we process targets sequentially and reuse a shortest path computation.
For each transition from number $k$ to $k+1$, we run a multi-source shortest path over a graph whose nodes are $(cell, piece)$. We initialize all states corresponding to the starting cell of number $k$, with all three pieces, but only those states consistent with the ending results of the previous segment. Then we compute shortest paths to reach the destination cell of number $k+1$, keeping track of both distance and number of replacements lexicographically.
Each move edge costs 1 step. A piece change also costs 1 step, but contributes to the secondary objective (replacements count). This gives us a lexicographically weighted shortest path where each state stores a pair $(steps, replacements)$, and transitions update accordingly.
Because the graph has at most 300 states and each segment involves standard Dijkstra or BFS with small state space, total complexity is easily acceptable.

Algorithm Walkthrough

We can switch piece to another piece $p'$ at cost $(1, 1)$, representing one operation and one replacement. We can also move according to piece $p$, which leads to a new cell $(r', c')$ with cost $(1, 0)$.
- We relax edges using lexicographic comparison: first minimize steps, then replacements. This ensures that among equal-length paths we prefer fewer piece changes.
- The destination of this segment is the cell containing number $k+1$. We record the best state among all three pieces at that cell and use it as the initialization for the next segment.
- We accumulate both total steps and total replacements across segments.
Why it works is that every valid traversal decomposes into independent segments between consecutive numbers, and within each segment the state space fully captures all decisions about movement and piece switching. Because transitions are Markovian in $(cell, piece)$, we never need to remember earlier history beyond the best arrival states. Lexicographic shortest path guarantees that local optimality per segment composes globally since segment boundaries are fixed and unavoidable.
