Then the city is modified in a very specific way. For every station $w$, if it has neighbors $u$ and $v$, then a new direct tunnel is added between $u$ and $v$. In other words, every node induces a clique on its neighbors. These edges are added simultaneously based on the original tree structure, not iteratively.
After all these extra edges are added, the graph is no longer a tree. The task is to compute the sum of shortest-path distances over all pairs of nodes in this new graph.
The constraint $n \le 2 \cdot 10^5$ immediately rules out any approach that recomputes shortest paths between all pairs or even runs BFS per node. A quadratic or $O(n^2 \log n)$ approach is already too slow. We need something linear or near-linear, typically $O(n)$ or $O(n \log n)$, and it must exploit strong structural properties of the added edges.
A subtle issue is that distances can only decrease, but not in an obvious uniform way. Two nodes may become directly connected even if they were far apart in the original tree, as long as they share a parent. A brute force approach would explicitly construct the new graph by adding edges between every pair of neighbors of every node, then run BFS from every node to compute all-pairs shortest paths. In a star, this already creates $\Theta(n^2)$ edges, and BFS per node makes it $\Theta(n^3)$ in the worst case. Even storing the graph becomes infeasible.
The key observation is that every new edge is between two nodes that share a common neighbor in the original tree. So any shortcut path of length 2 in the tree becomes a direct edge. This means that in the new graph, distance between two nodes is either 1 (if they are within distance 2 in the tree), or at least 2 if they are further apart.
More importantly, the structure allows us to reinterpret shortest paths in terms of the original tree: every pair of nodes either remains connected through a tree-like path or gets shortened exactly when a length-2 step is available. The problem becomes counting how many pairs have distance 1, distance 2, etc., but instead of simulating distances, we can compute contributions locally around each node.
The crucial reframe is to fix a node $w$ and consider its neighbors. In the new graph, all neighbors of $w$ form a clique, so any pair among them has distance 1. Algorithm Walkthrough
- Root the tree at an arbitrary node, say 1, and compute subtree sizes with a DFS. This is necessary because many contributions depend on how edges split the tree into components.
- Compute the original sum of distances between all pairs in a tree using the standard edge contribution method: for each edge, if removing it splits the tree into components of sizes $a$ and $b$, it contributes $a \cdot b$ to the total distance. This gives a baseline total.

Why it works
In the original tree, any two neighbors of a node $w$ have distance exactly 2 via $w$. After adding the new edges, they become directly connected, so their distance becomes 1 and cannot be further reduced.
