However, a full minimax strategy is unnecessary because the structure of forced pairs reduces the game to a much simpler greedy process over a dynamically shrinking set.

This quickly leads to a branching process: at each step there are up to $O(n)$ possible moves, and the depth is $2n$, producing an exponential number of states. Even with memoization, the interaction state depends on the exact remaining set, making this intractable.
The key observation is that the forced pair rule does not introduce choice complexity, it only changes removal timing. Once a hero is selected, its pair (if it exists) is immediately resolved on the next move, meaning both endpoints leave the game in adjacent turns regardless of strategy. Algorithm Walkthrough
We maintain a structure that always allows us to query the highest-value hero that has not been taken yet.
- Read all heroes and their values, and record which heroes are paired. This is needed only to ensure we respect validity, not for decision-making.
- Insert all heroes into a structure sorted by decreasing power. This defines the order in which we would like to consume them.
- Maintain a boolean array marking whether each hero has already been taken.
- On your turn, repeatedly take the highest-value hero that is still available.
- After outputting a choice, wait for the opponent’s response and mark that hero as taken as well.
- Continue alternating until all heroes are consumed, ensuring each selection always picks the best remaining option.
The only subtlety is that “available” must reflect both direct picks and forced removals due to pair constraints. However, since every removed hero is immediately marked unavailable, we never accidentally reuse it in later selections.
Why it works
At every moment, the set of remaining heroes fully captures all future possibilities. The effect of pair constraints is purely local: selecting a hero may remove its partner, but this does not preserve or create any additional structure in the remaining graph. Therefore, the only meaningful decision at each step is which available value to take immediately. Any strategy that skips a higher-value available hero in favor of a lower one strictly decreases the final sum without improving future availability in a compensating way, because availability evolves only by deletions, not by rearrangement or unlocking.

The code maintains a global ordering of heroes by strength and a pointer that always advances to the next unused candidate. Each time it is our turn, we pick the strongest still-available hero. When a hero is taken by either side, we also immediately mark its paired partner as unavailable, reflecting the forced rule.
The pointer-based scan avoids repeatedly sorting or scanning the entire list, keeping selection efficient.
